I liked this film, but not as much as you though and the reason is because his character is hard to identify since the only reason why the central was still alive b/c of his gift, and because I hated the two particular Nazis I also wanted to know about the whereabouts of them and whether or not they were ever caught since they were using forged passports! It may be a part of history but ineffective and wanted to know more.

I see what you mean. But personally I could identify myself pretty well with the main character (Sally, I mean). He's a loner with survival instinct and cares for no other moral than the one between the prisoners. I liked him (may sound strange, haha?) As for the Herzog I was quite satisfied with his character development, he (just like Sally) didn't care about the war and had no interest in killing people, only to support his family.
