The Secret in Their Eyes alternates between two time-lines around the central characters of Benjamin and his boss Irene. The plot centers around an investigation of the rape and murder of a young woman. In the past-timeline, Benjamin is seen as one of lead investigators who is seen working on the case with zeal and passion along with his partner Pablo. In the present timeline Benjamin reminisces by writing a book based on his experiences on the case.
The movie showcases an excellent plot which slowly unravels into a very interesting murder mystery with frequent surprises and keeps you guessing the whole time. The relationship between benjamin and irene is what keeps the movie going when the tempo of the investigation slows down. It carries a lot of depth and allows you to be interested in the outcome of not just the investigation and saves the movie from being just another murder mystery albeit with a conscience.
The investigation itself is well developed and progresses at a pace which complements the style of the movie.
The need for multiple timelines seems unnecessary initially especially because it doesn't give more insight than what just one timeline would've delivered but their use becomes apparent towards the end of the movie.
The characters are very well written and each one shows enormous depth. It took great performances from the actors to portray the complexities involved with each of these characters.
The movie has enough content to keep you interested over the entire 125 mins and also delivers enough to deserve all the hype surrounding it.
