To my immense surprise, Universal studios has turned out a funny, charming, and--yes, even heartwarming--animated picture. Gru, the smooth-pated villain, somehow manages to be charming in his evildoings, and grows on the audience even more as the girls grow on him. The girls are sweet and lovable, and the shenanigans of the little yellow Minions are hilarious. (Watch the credits for more fun with these guys.) It was a nice touch for Gru to be able to recognize all of his look-alike Minions by name. Their loyalty and devotion shows that they know before the audience does that he's a good guy at heart.
Still, even though I had a wonderful time, I'm not quite sure the movie is a 90% in my book. I found the very beginning to be somewhat off-putting, even though the movie quickly hit its stride. An 85% would be about right, but I'll round up since I enjoyed it so much.
Bottom line? If you're on the fence, go see this movie. The trailers don't do it justice, even though it's much better advertised than the woefully under-exposed and thoroughly wonderful How to Train Your Dragon.
