American Gangster arrived in theaters this weekend, and with it this year's race to the Academy Awards. Surely, Ridley Scott's(Alien, Gladiator) new film about American Ganster and title character Frank Lucas(Denzel Washington) is a safe bet to be around when nominations are announced, if for nothing else, the two stellar performances of it's Oscar-winning leads, Washington and Russel Crowe, who plays the Detective whose entire career as head of a Special Drug Investigations unit was pinned on the arrest and capture of Lucas.
The film does a great job of drawing the audience in and showing them not only one man's rise to the top of the drug-trafficking-underworld, but also the inner-turmoil of the corrupt police system at the time. Parrallels most certainly are drawn between that time in history and today and even with the extraordinary running-time of over 2 and 1/2 hours, the natural progression of the story keeps the film moving at a brisk, and enjoyable pace. I must say, my anticipation for this film could not have been higher, and it delivered in every way, go check it out.
