There Will Be Blood is an excellent look into the mind of a crazed sociopath at the turn of the century. From poor gold miner to rich oil man, Daniel Plainview is one of the most intriguing characters onscreen in 2007. Unfortunatly for me, and many others, this movie is opening in very limited release and slowly expanding. I was lucky enough to catch this movie yesterday, and must say I will have to rearrange my top ten of 2007. Daniel Day-Lewis is superb as Plainview. Day-Lewis only does movies he feels will be great and this is no exception. The story encapsulates you as you join Plainview in his lust for oil.
Along for the ride is his son, who is business partner, H. W. Plainview. Also, in another excellent role is Paul Dano, as the religous fanatic Eli Sunday. Paul Thomas Anderson's vision is purely dark and eccentric. His direction is inspired by the great Kubric in this film, and is complemented by the music. This movie is not for the regular run-of-the-mill popcorn movie goer. This film is dark, and is Rated R not for violence or cussing, but for the adult themes and dark tone over the movie. This is an adult movie for intellegent movie goers. It is a movie that is over 2 1/2 hours in duration, and will make you think. But, having said that, it is a movie that you shouldn't miss. This should be a great battle at the Academy Awards this year between No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. It will be exciting to see who comes out on top.
