Best and Worse of the Superhero genre of this decade.

    Posted on 11/30/09 02:39 PM | Last edited on 11/30/09 02:39 PM

We are now approaching the end of this decade, and I just felt like discussing the best and the worst of the Superhero movies which came out. Despite some occassional disappointments in the genre, the 2000's overall, is the best decade ever experienced by Superhero films. Early on, we were treated with X-Men, Spider-Man and their fantastic sequels; Spider-Man 2 and X2, all of these films where character development mattered just as much as the action gave a lot of heart set the bar higher for the genre. In the middle of the decade we were treated to a massive revamption of the Batman saga with Batman Begins: One of the darkest and compelling of the character's films. Also, in 2006 we were given a surprisingly good Superman film and near the end, we were astonished with the supremely amazing critical and commercial success of The Dark Knight, often hailed by many to be the best Superhero movie of all time. Iron Man was great too, and I heard Watchmen was well appreciated by the critics.

But what about the shortcomings? Yeah there were quite a few, nothing like the 80's or the 90's (everyone knows what I mean when I talk about the 90's), but still, we were thrashed a lot mid way through with the release of X-Men the Last Stand to Zoom and all the way forward to Spider-Man 3. Blade Trinity was a somewhat disappointment and Elektra was a disastrously boring film. Need I say more? Yes I think so. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Sliver Surfer was a bust and there was the mediocre Punisher film by Thomas Jane.

Overall, this decade was a great decade; one responsible for revolutionising the superhero film industry, and hopefully next decade, we'll have an even bigger success in this genre.

Top 5 best Superhero films of the decade in my book:

    1) Spider-Man

    2) Batman Begins

    3) The Dark Knight

    4) Spider-Man 2

    5) The Incredible Hulk

P.S. The top three of the list are equal, listed to chronological order.

Top 5 worst Superhero movies of the decade in my book:

    1) Catwoman

    2) Zoom

    3) Elektra

    4) X-Men: The Last Stand

    5) Spider-Man 3

Hey UH, you'd put Hulk above Iron Man? Seriously? Wow. And as for stinkers, I think there has to be a space for Wolverine Origins. That movie sucked balls! Worst CGI ever.

I didn't think it was that bad, Wolverine. Thing is, it was a sort of split decision between Iron Man and Incredible Hulk. Thing is, I loved Iron Man, but the Hulk seemed to have more soul in the Bruce Banner character. Nothing against Iron Man, Tony Stark has a lot of that, but we don't get to see the pain of Tony as much as we see it in Bruce Banner. You know what I mean?

Yeah. I do actually after reading CR Lopez's reviews of both Hulks. I didn't care for either, but he was/is such a huge fan of the green guy that I actually went back and watched BOTH just to see what was up. SO, yeah, I do get it. Still, you have to give Robert Downey Jr. props for making Tony Stark the most loveable asshole billionaire on the planet. ;)

I'm surprised that The Incredible Hulk was in your top, I wasn't crazy about it, even tho' it was 100 times better than the Ang Lee one.Great list, I'd have put The Incredibles on the top too, one of my fav. animated films.

love that you put the 2008 hulk on the list, i really liked that one and dont get why so many people didnt. It has all the character development youre going to get out of him. And some sick action sets. As for Iron Man not being there, i'd say you need to expand your list. And on the worst there were tons of shitty movies, worst than Spidey 3. At least Punisher War Zone or Fantastic 4. It didnt live up to its predecessors, but if there had never been a Spider-man 1 or 2 to compare it with, Spidey 3 would have gotten better feedback. It certainly isnt one of the worst 5.

I just limited my list to 5, if I made it 10, Iron Man and the Hulk would be the same rating, just Hulk one up because it didn't get the recognition it deserved. 5 on the worst is not the worst, the worst was Catwoman.
