So, a couple of movies I have watched recently that I liked a lot...
I recently rented The Motorcycle Diaries and found it very engaging, less so for the socio-political aspects of Che's story and more for the wonderfully beautiful tour around South America. It's probably not the nobelest way for this movie to affect me, as a travel guide, but my wanderlust has been insatiable lately. Can I stay with any of you for a few days vacation? :(
Also, caught Grizzly Man a few days ago. This movie really engaged me in the character study it presented of Tim Treadwell. His interest in preserving the Grizzly bear was secondary (not necessarily in his mind, but in the mind of a neutral observer) to that of using the experience as a catharsis and as an escape from the rest of humanity. He was in a downward spiral in his normal life, failing at his attempts to become a sucessful member of humanity and his time in the Alaskan wilderness was his only salvation despite it's tragic end. My only lament is the opinionated observances by Herzog. I would have prefer he were a more neutral observer and let us reach our own conclusions, but we couldn't have expected anything else from Herzog. I'm just happy he brought us the story.
