Weekly Ketchup: July 17, 2009 - Sam Raimi Enters the World of Warcraft
Category:
Weekly Ketchup

Posted on 7/27/09 at 1:52 PM

Mood:
A-OK
This is the week of Comic Con in San Diego, and so the world of movie news, and in particular, big fan-friendly projects is quite active. Weekly Ketchup writer Greg Dean Schmitz isn't at Comic Con this year, but is still able to combine some of the convention's biggest news items with stuff that actually happened in Hollywood separate from San Diego. Since the column is being written midway through the convention, it's possible this week some hot items might get missed, but as of writing, here's how the week stands.

#1 SAM RAIMI WILL TAKE US TO THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT
Director Sam Raimi (the Spider-Man and Evil Dead franchises) has signed on with Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures (The Dark Knight, 300, Watchmen) to be the man who brings Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft video game fantasy franchise to the big screen. Sam Raimi will be overseeing the development of the movie over the next several months, including while also filming Spider-Man 4 next year for Columbia Pictures, with expectations that he will then move on to film Warcraft next (possibly in 2011?). Warcraft got its start as a series of real-time strategy games for the PC, before being adapted as the immensely popular World of Warcraft MMORPG (which, it's worth noting, is not the title of this movie). Warcraft is set in the fantasy world of Azeroth, in which two powerful factions, the Alliance and the Horde are pitted against each other, sometimes in all out war (the RTS games) and more recently in a sort of cold war stalemate (World of Warcraft). The Alliance is made up of humans, dwarves, gnomes, night elves and a blue-skinned alien-like race called the draenei, while the Horde is comprised of orcs, trolls, undead, blood elves and the tauren (minotaurs). What exactly the story will be about is unknown, especially since with Raimi's involvement, it appears that the previous scripts might be thrown out as screenwriter Gary Whitta is now off the project. All of the Warcraft games are very dependent upon story, and have created a dense lore and mythology ( http://www.wowwiki.com ) which offers enough material for several epic movies. The latest World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, opened up the continent of Northrend, where players were sent on quests to battle the forces of Arthas, the former prince of Lordaeron who became seduced into becoming the leader of the Scourge, an evil and massive army of the undead.

#2 DC COMICS RAMPS UP MOVIE PLANS: THE FLASH, GREEN ARROW, AQUAMAN, ADAM STRANGE AND... BIZARRO SUPERMAN?
Apparently as a sort of a lead up article to Comic Con, The Hollywood Reporter this week published a summary of DC Comics' various comic book adaptation plans, with an emphasis on the company's renewed interest in both focusing and increasing their efforts. The next three movies will be Jonah Hex, The Losers and of course, Green Lantern. Other projects that DC and Warner Bros are actively developing at the moment include The Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow (as well as Super Max, in which Green Arrow is also the central hero), Shazam, a Constantine sequel, a movie about space adventurer Adam Strange, and perhaps most surprisingly, a movie about one of Superman's most famous villains, Bizarro, which the trade refers to as Bizarro Superman. These movies that are based upon what some might call DC's "second string" heroes appear to be able to get produced with less drama than the three characters that are noticeably absent from the list: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, all three of which the studio still has interest in adapting, but admits are each perhaps years from happening anytime soon.

#3 BIG MOVIES TO FILM SOON: G.I. JOE 2, POTC 4, DARK SHADOWS, BATMAN 3
This week's Comic Con has brought talk of when several big movies might start filming (mostly, next year). First up, however, separate from Comic Con, was director Steven Sommers' revelation in Australia that G.I. Joe 2 is expected to start filming next summer, with apparently both Sommers and the full cast already signed on. Next up is the fourth Pirates of the Carribean movie from Disney, which an executive revealed they expect to start filming in April or May of 2010. The early word is that the movie will indeed still feature Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, but that some of the other actors (namely Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley) may not continue on in what is being described as the start of a second trilogy for the franchise. In other Johnny Depp news, also at Comic Con, Tim Burton revealed that of the many projects to which he is attached, his next film after Alice in Wonderland will be his adaptation of the horror soap opera Dark Shadows, which will star Johnny Depp as the vampire Barnabas Collins. Finally, in the take-this-one-with-a-grain-of-salt category, Gary Oldman revealed at the Book of Eli conference that he is signed to start filming the third Batman movie next year, despite reports that seem to suggest that WB's plans for the movie might not be done by that time.

#4 (SOME OF) JAMES CAMERON'S AVATAR COMING TO THEATERS FOUR MONTHS EARLY (AND FOR FREE!)
Yesterday at Comic Con, after screening 20+ minutes of his upcoming CGI-heavy science fiction epic Avatar, James Cameron also announced that August 21, 2009 will be Avatar Day, on which 20th Century Fox will premiere to the public a 15 minute preview in as many IMAX and IMAX 3D screens as they can. And the icing on the cake is that this 15 minute preview will be free. The concept is that Cameron wants to give the general public the same sort of preview experience that the Comic Con audience received. That day will also see the premiere of the first full Avatar trailer in general theaters. You can read about what Cameron revealed of Avatar over at IGN Movies.

#5 LEONARDO DICAPRIO JUST CROSSED OVER INTO... THE TWILIGHT ZONE
Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Warner Bros are moving forward with plans to revive The Twilight Zone as a new feature film, to be written by Rand Ravich, writer/director of 1999's The Astronaut's Wife, and creator of the NBC detective show Life. The Twilight Zone got its start of course as a classic science fiction anthology TV show in 1959, produced and hosted by Rod Serling, which was followed by two more TV series in 1985 and 2002. In 1983, four of Hollywood's hottest directors (Steven Spielberg, John Landis, Joe Dante and George Miller) got together to make an anthology feature film (also a WB release), which is now perhaps most famous for a helicopter accident which caused the death of actor Vic Morrow, although it should also be remembered for being a darn great movie, too. What DiCaprio's Twilight Zone movie will be is not yet known, but the two most likely choices seem to be either another set of stories, or perhaps one single story adapting one of the many classic episodes from the original series. It's also not yet known if DiCaprio's involvement as producer might also mean that he would also star in the movie.

#6 SONY'S TALKING TO THE MAN IN THE MIRROR: THE MICHAEL JACKSON CONCERT MOVIE
Sony Pictures is close to finalizing a $50 million deal to produce a theatrical Michael Jackson concert movie using the 80 hours of rehearsal footage shot in the days just before the pop star's June 25th, 2009 death. Although several studios, including Paramount, Fox and Universal negotiated for the rights to this concert movie, Sony was always perceived as having the inside advantage since most of Michael Jackson's music is also published by Sony's music division. Kenny Ortega (Newsies, the High School Musical franchise), who filmed the rehearsal footage, is expected to direct this movie version, and is reportedly already at work on compiling the footage into a movie that Sony could release by the end of 2009. Ortega has the time this year to work on this Michael Jackson project, as his next film, the remake of Footloose, doesn't start filming until March, 2010. The feature is expected to include three new music videos, including an alternative version of "Thriller," which were intended to play in 3D at the concerts, although it is unclear if 3D would be used in the theatrical release of the movie.

#7 ENTER THE DRAGON AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN
The family of legendary martial artist and actor Bruce Lee have announced plans to bring his life to film not as just one film, but as a trilogy of biopics. The first film, Bruce Lee, will start filming in China in October, on a budget of $7 million, with Tony Leung Ka-Fai already cast as Lee's father, although all other cast (including Bruce) and a director have not been hired yet. Bruce Lee is scheduled for release on November 27, 2010, which will be the 70th anniversary of Lee's birth, although that date does not necessarily apply to the United States, since the movie does not yet have a distributor here. There have been a few Bruce Lee biopics already, including 1993's Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, starring Jason Scott Lee (no relation). Acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou (who is currently filming the Chinese remake of Blood Simple) has also expressed interest in making a Bruce Lee biopic (perhaps the family will recruit him?).

#8 DAVID CRONENBERG TO TAKE US ON A BIZARRE JOURNEY TO COSMOPOLIS
Acclaimed Canadian director David Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome, Eastern Promises) has signed on to helm an adaptation of Don DeLillo's 2003 novel, Cosmopolis. The premise of Cosmopolis sounds bizarre, and promises to potentially be a return to the style of some of Cronenberg's earlier film, except perhaps without some of the grosser elements. Cosmopolis is the story of a 28 year old billionaire's journey across Manhattan in his tech-heavy limousine, as he attempts to get a new haircut, but spends the day in a series of entanglements, including traffic jams caused by a presidential visit, a funeral procession for a rap star and a full scale riot. Meanwhile, the billionaire is also stalked by two men, has a series of chance encounters with his wife, and sees his fortune potentially dwindling away after he bet against the yen in the foreign markets. Cosmopolis, which has not yet been cast, will be a French-Canadian coproduction and will film in New York City and Toronto in 2010.

#9 THIS WEEK IN SAW-RELATED NEWS
This week saw an unusual flurry of news items that all have ties to the Saw horror franchise. First up is Saw VII, which is gearing up for production even as Saw VI awaits its expected annual release this coming October. David Hackl, the production designer of II, III and IV, and the director of Saw V, will return to direct VII as well, from a script by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the writers of IV, V and VI, the three Feast movies and next weekend's The Collector. Plot details are unknown, but it will probably involve torture, I'm guessing. Filming of Saw VII starts in January, 2010. Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera, has signed to write and direct a horror film called Abattoir, which will also be adapted as a graphic novel. Abattoir (French for "slaughterhouse") is the story of a real estate agent who has to clean up a mansion following a bloody massacre there who encounters a strange old man who draws him into a dangerous "web of shadows, murders and massacres." Finally, there is James Wan, who directed the first Saw and 2007's Death Sentence. Wan has signed on to cowrite and direct the long-awaited adaptation of the Castlevania video game series, about a vampire hunter's attempts to bring down Dracula and his undead hordes. That, in a nutshell, is a lot of Saw news for one week.

#10 BLACK SABBATH GETS THEIR OWN HORROR FRANCHISE?
Producer Mike Fleiss (Hostel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Poseidon) has set up a new production company called Next Films, and the first announced project is a new horror movie franchise called Black Sabbath. At first glance, one might suspect that this would be a remake of the 1963 Italian horror film, but what Black Sabbath will actually be is a new concept inspired by the name of the groundbreaking heavy metal band, Black Sabbath (although the movie won't be about the band other than the title. Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, in addition to approving the use of the band's name, is also scoring the movie. Iommi currently owns the trademark of the Black Sabbath name, but lead singer Ozzy Osbourne recently filed suit for 50% of the rights. Anyway, no other details are known about Black Sabbath, such as a plotline, and apparently the project does not yet have a writer, either. So, what do you think a Black Sabbath horror movie should be about?

ROTTEN IDEA OF THE WEEK: NICOLAS CAGE TO PLAY THE GREEN HORNET VILLAIN
This week's rotten idea does not go to a newly announced movie, this column's specialty, but to a bit of casting news: Nicolas Cage is in talks to play the "gangster villain" in next summer's comedic adaptation of The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogan, with Cameron Diaz in talks to play his reporter romantic interest. Now, I should note, that this particular "rotten idea" is not entirely about the movie, which I hold out some promise for, since it's being directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind). Nope, I'm particularly just concerned with the career of Nicolas Cage, who once showed a lot of promise, but in recent years, has mostly shown an interest in making a series of bizarre casting choices in flawed movies like Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man. In other words, he's one or two movies away from becoming John Travolta. The two movies Cage currently has in the can, heading towards release, are Season of the Witch, where he plays a medieval knight and Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, where he plays a wizard. Now, it's possible that his Green Hornet villain role will be awesome, but I just have this sneaking suspicion that it won't be. And since Nicolas Cage was once one of my favorite actors (back in the Leaving Las Vegas days), that makes his casting the Rotten Idea of the Week.

Weekly Ketchup: July 17, 2009 - Paramount Toying Around With Max Steel
Category:
Weekly Ketchup

Mood:
*Shrug*
This Week's Ketchup includes the requisite toy movie, but thankfully, there are no remakes, although there is one movie based on an old TV show and two different movies based on young adult book series. Included in the actual original concepts are two comedies about today's economic hard times, a biopic about a classic children's book author, a historical epic about King Henry V and a time travel sci-fi action movie called Arena.

#1 FIRST CAME TRANSFORMERS, THEN G.I. JOE AND NOW PARAMOUNT IS TOYING AROUND WITH MAX STEEL
With Paramount just a couple of weeks away from releasing G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the studio has found another action figure franchise in the form of Mattel's Max Steel. Max Steel started as an action figure in 1999 and starred in a 2000-2002 animated TV series, but has apparently proven to be much successful in Latin America, where Max Steel is the #1 action figure property. Max Steel is the story of a 19-year-old extreme sports enthusiast who is injured in an accident that infects his body with nanobots that make him superhuman, leading to him being recruited by a secret agency, where he is of course teamed up with lots of other action figure friendly people. Mattel hopes that a major motion picture will help the toy manufacturer relaunch the toy line in the United States and other regions where it is not as popular as in Latin America. There is currently no writer or director attached to Max Steel, or word on when Paramount plans on releasing this latest toy property, which now joins the ranks at Paramount with Hasbro's Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises.

#2 BRIDGET JONES TO OBSESS ABOUT HER WEIGHT AND LOVE LIFE ONE MORE TIME?
Variety is reporting that it is "rumored" that Working Title is developing a third movie in the Bridget Jones series, following the two movies that were based upon books by Helen Fielding, despite there not being a third novel to adapt for a third movie. Instead, it is expected that this third movie will be based upon columns that Fielding wrote in 2005 for the British newspaper The Independent, in which Bridget, now in her 40s, attempts to have a baby before it's too late. Renee Zellweger did just turn 40 this past April, so the timing is quite on the mark. Another bit of news for Working Title this week is that the British production company has hired Cate Blanchett to star in Indian Summer, a drama set in 1947 in the final days of British rule of India, which was written by William Nicholson (Shadowlands, First Knight) and will be directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, The Soloist).

#3 BARELY REMEMBERED 1960S WESTERN THE BIG VALLEY HEADED TO THE BIG SCREEN
In quite unexpected news, the 1965-1969 ABC family western TV series The Big Valley is being developed as a movie which will begin filming in April, 2010 in Michigan and New Mexico. The Big Valley was the story of a widowed matriarch (Barbara Stanwyck) of the prosperous Barkley ranch in central California, and her three sons (including an illegitimate half-brother played by Lee Majors) and a daughter (Linda Evans). The show was very similar to the long-running Bonanza, if you switch Lorne Greene out for Barbara Stanwyck, and a less dusty setting. The concept for this Big Valley movie was developed by the show's creators, and is being produced by Kate Edelman Johnson, the daughter of show runner Louis F. Edelman. The Big Valley was written and will be written by Daniel Adams, who also directed this year's independent drama The Golden Boys, starring David Carradine, Bruce Dern and Rip Torn. There's no word yet about who will be cast in the movie's five major roles.

#4 THIS WEEK IN CASTING: JOHN CARTER OF MARS, THOR, I HOP, STRAW DOGS
Rather than take up four slots on the list that could go to new projects, this entry will cover this week's major bits of casting news. First up is Willem Dafoe, who has joined the cast of John Carter of Mars as Tars Tarkas, the four-armed giant green warrior that befriends Carter when he arrives on Mars. It's not known how exactly Dafoe will portray Tarkas, but my best guess would be some sort of motion capture CGI animation. Next up is the confirmation that Natalie Portman will be costarring in Thor as Jane Foster, but this news actually first appeared online a few months ago. The part of the news that is new is that the movie's version of Jane Foster will not be a nurse, but rather a sort of doctor/scientist. This change is most likely due to the movie not using the Dr. Donald Blake alter ego from the early comics, with whom Jane Foster worked. Next up is British comedian Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) who will be starring in I Hop, one of the Easter-themed movies that is being raced through development in competition with each other. I Hop is the story of a slacker who runs over the real Easter Bunny, breaking his leg so that he can't hop, and so the guy has to take on the Bunny's duties. Finally, there are Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgard (HBO's True Blood), who will costar with James Marsden in the remake of Straw Dogs, which moves the story of rape and revenge from England to Mississippi, with Bosworth playing Marsden's wife, and Skarsgard playing her high school boyfriend, a former football hero. The changes to the story's setting and some character elements make this Straw Dogs a hard project to predict, but like most remakes, the real question is... why bother remaking a movie that was already great?

#5 DISNEY GIVES MILEY CYRUS WINGS
Walt Disney Pictures has acquired the bestselling young adult novel Wings by Aprilynne Pike as a starring vehicle for their Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus. The first of a planned four book series, Wings is the story of a 15 year old girl who discovers that she is actually a faerie sent to live among humans as a guardian of the gateway to the magical land of Avalon when a bump on her back blossoms into a giant flower, which eventually becomes wings. The faerie falls in love with another (boy) faerie as she learns that she is destined to be caught between a war between faeries and trolls over control of the gateway to Avalon. Published in May, Wings has been a success but has also garned expected comparisons to the popular Twilight franchise, and it just so happens that the producers of Wings also coproduced the first Twilight movie. So, are you looking forward to seeing Miley Cyrus running around with giant flower-like wings bouncing around her shoulders?

#6 ED HELMS RECOVERS FROM HIS HANGOVER IN CEDAR RAPIDS
While two of the leads in this summer's surprise comedy hit, The Hangover, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis, have been lining up their next movies the last few weeks, that left Ed Helms, who played the dentist, as the next question mark as to how he would follow up such a major success. Helms, who was a longtime correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and is now on NBC's The Office has chosen to go the indie comedy route rather than sign on for another big studio movie just yet. In Cedar Rapids, Helms will play "a sad-sack insurance agent who goes to an industry convention to try to save the jobs of his colleagues." Cedar Rapids was developed by Helms, written by newcomer writer Phil Johnston, will be directed Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl, Chuck & Buck) and is being produced by director Alexander Payne (Election, Sideways). Filming of Cedar Rapids will start in October, 2009 while Ed Helms is on hiatus from shooting of The Office. Several distributors are currently looking at Cedar Rapids, with Fox Searchlight considered to be the frontrunner since they have handled many of Payne's movies. Ed Helms is also writing, and will costar in, an untitled Civil War time travel comedy for Warner Bros, the studio behind The Hangover.

#7 PREPARE FOR THE EPIC 15TH CENTURY BATTLE OF AGINCOURT
London's Independent Film Company has hired writer and producer Michael Hurst, who created Showtime's The Tudors and also wrote 1998's Elizabeth, to adapt the 2008 bestselling novel, Agincourt (also known as Azincourt), by Bernard Cornwell. Agincourt, as you might guess from the title, tells the story of the landmark Battle of Agincourt, which was also the central battle of William Shakespeare's Henry V. In Cornwell's novel, the central character is an archer named Nicholas Hook who earns recognition from King Henry V of England and fights alongside him against the French army in a 1415 battle that proved the superiority of the English longbowmen, in what is considered one of the bloodiest battles in European history. Agincourt will be a $35 million production, with filming expected to start in the spring of 2011.

#8 MR. FANTASTIC IS BANKING ON MR. TOAD
Ioan Gruffudd, who is best known for playing Reed Richards in the two Fantastic Four movies has signed on to star in the British biopic Banking on Mr. Toad, with Samantha Morton (Minority Report, In America) in talks to play his character's wife, Elspeth. In Banking on Mr. Toad, Gruffudd will play 19th century author Kenneth Grahame, who made the transition from a career as a secretary for the Bank of England to becoming the author of The Wind in the Willows, the classic children's book about anthromorphic animals, including Mr. Toad, Mr. Badger, Ratty and Mole. Banking on Mr. Toad will be helmed by acclaimed director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Tender Mercies, Breaker Morant) from a script by producer Timothy Haas and Wendy Oberman, both of whom are first time screenwriters. Production is scheduled to start in Ireland later this year.

#9 WARNER BROS HIRES DIRECTOR FOR POST-HARRY POTTER BOY WIZARD PROJECT SEPTIMUS HEAP
As filming continues on the two Deathly Hallows movies to wrap up the Harry Potter movie franchise, Warner Bros is apparently looking at how they can continue on in the lucrative boy wizard business. David Frankel (Marley & Me, The Devil Wears Prada) has been hired to direct Septimus Heap: Magyk, an animated adaptation of the first book of a seven part series by Angie Sage, with newcomer Rob Lieber working on the script. Magyk was the first book in the series, published in 2005, and it was followed by Flyte, Physik, Queste and Syren comes out this September, with two more books to follow. Septimus Heap is a young wizard who was the seventh son of a seventh son and who must spend seven years studying magic under a powerful wizard before he can eventually take her place. Specifically, Magyk is the book in which 10 year olds Septimus and his adopted sister discover their destinies, which include his sister eventually becoming a princess. Septimus Heap: Magyk is described as an "animated fantasy project," but it's currently unknown what company will be handling the animation.

#10 NEVER BACK DOWN DIRECTOR READY TO ENTER THE ARENA
Summit Entertainment is looking to stay in business with Jeff Wadlow, the director of 2008's Never Back Down (and also 2005's Cry_Wolf). Wadlow had been attached to direct a prison escape movie called The Tomb, but when that project stalled, the fledgling studio (Twlight, Knowing, Push) has instead switched Wadlow over to a sci-fi action movie called Arena. First time writers Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell wrote Arena, which is about a group of modern soldiers who find themselves transported to a strange shifting landscape where they are pitted into gladiator-style combat with warriors from throughout history. Although Summit's output so far hasn't been spectacular, it's nice to at least see that this new studio is mostly focusing on original concepts, rather than all of the remakes and other tired concepts that the major studios are currently obsessed with. Arena might turn out to be awful, but the concept is at least sort of awesome.

ROTTEN IDEA OF THE WEEK: DING DONG, HUGH JACKMAN IS AT YOUR DOOR AS YOUR LOCAL AVON MAN
Economic hardship is so funny, right up there with Nazis (Life is Beautiful, The Producers) and race relations (Soul Man, White Chicks). And so, there are a lot of movies in the works about people down on their luck (including #6's Cedar Rapids), and following the intensive action of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Hugh Jackman has lined one up as well. In the comedy Avon Man, Jackman will play a laid off car salesman who takes a job as an Avon cosmetics salesperson, which is "initially emasculating", until the story eventually takes on a "Full Monty vibe when the car salesman sets out to save his financially strapped family and town by conscripting his buddies into the makeup business to win a regional contest." 20th Century Fox acquired the Avon Man pitch in a high six figure deal from Hitch writer Kevin Bisch. Here's guessing that the Avon Man trailer will feature a scene where Jackman's girlfriend/wife walks in on him fully made up in the sort of dated makeup women haven't worn since Maude was a hit.
