When I first saw the trailer to Hellboy 2, I thought "Wow. Holy crap, that is going to be one hell of a movie!" And I stuck through that. Until I actually saw the movie. To be perfectly honest...Hellboy fell short of my standards. Del Toro tried to mix in 2 different love stories in it, which I thought was touching, but not genius and not fitting for an action movie.
However, I must commend Del Toro for his once again spectacular fantasy creature, character, and scenery effects. He's always had an eye for that, also in Pan's Labyrinth. The character makeup is stunning and often graphic CG is blended in so well with the movie that I cannot tell some of the characters are actors in suits at all.
The beginning of the movie, I found creepy and weird. The kid Hellboy had really big teeth. Present day though, I enjoyed very, very much. Luke Goss is the perfect person to play Prince Nuada, if I do say so myself. The ending, however, I cannot say I enjoyed much at all. Del Toro's fighting scenes are very easy to get caught up in and are often times very enjoyable. However, I think the ending action scene came off as stupid and silly. I mean, Abe practically just handed the last piece over without as much as a second thought!
I don't think the chaos that the Golden Army can create is emphasized enough. In fact, I thought the Golden Army looked like golden toilet seats, to be honest. Which is really the downfall to the movie in my opinion;the movie IS called Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.
All in all, Del Toro has created yet another movie of dazzling creatures and great visual effects;the story, however, lacked depth.
