The old days where Pixar made utterly brilliant films seems to be gone. Toy Story 3, Cars 2, the upcoming Finding Nemo Again (sorry, Finding Dory) and now this prequel. Pixar, an animation studio that once prided itself on originality, is sequelising itself silly of late. And, putting the glorious Toy Story 3 aside, they are only okay not brilliant like how Pixar films used to be, I haven't seen a brilliant Pixar film since way back in 2010 with the classic Toy Story 3. Not to say the films since 2010 haven't been good because they have been really enjoyable they just don't have that Pixar magic in them anymore.
Anyway lets talk about Monsters University the newest film from Pixar! I was slightly surprised that Pixar decided to make a prequel to the 2001 classic Monsters Inc when you have The Incredibles sitting there begging for a squeal.
They made it anyhow and it looks amazing the animation is simply wonderful! Every millimetre of monster hair is as beautifully animated as you'd expect of Pixar and the backgrounds are colourful and beautiful, the hard work that goes into a Pixar film is clearly obvious the animation in these films are simply the best! It's a shame the script didn't have as much work put into it. I still don't understand why they felt the need to return to the monster world again. I just didn't think Minsters Inc needed a prequel it didn't even need a squeal it was just a wonderful stand alone film that had so much magic in it the kind of magic this film doesn't. I did like the references to Monsters Inc though and some of the phrases used in Minsters Inc were here which was nice to see.
This film had some cameos from characters from Monsters Inc which was great to see. I always look forward to hearing John Ratzenbergers voice and you have to wait until the end to hear it. I also liked how they ended the film. If you watch this and then Monsters Inc it will be just like watching a long film it will fit together nicely.
Kids will enjoy this film more then adults but adults will still like this film it's just a shame because it could of been a little better.
With its giddie-friendly gloop-based japes and adorable characters but you expect, just a little more from Pixar, including a more enlightened representation of female characters (employ more girls, guys). It's good, but no classic like the first one.
