Speed Racer (2008)
Agrees With....
Posted on 5/11/08 at 6:57 PM To explain Speed Racer in a quippy opening paragraph or even a long review might be impossible for a human being to do. Because of this, most reviewers find the movie difficult to handle, and therefore give it poor scores. However, I will say almost entirely positive things about due to the fact that my job is not to explain movies in my writing, but merely to watch and enjoy. I will give you my thoughts on different elements of the movie in separate paragraphs.
Story Every part of the story seemed to work well with the movie as a whole. There was a problem with editing, probably the movie's biggest problem in my opinion, but it never felt to really slow down too much. It probably ended up being about 15 minutes longer than it should have been, which is not a really huge problem. Possibly the strongest part about the story was that the evil powers working to fix all the races were truly evil. You were really motivated to keep watching just so you could see he bad guys get exposed. Characters Despite the awesome visuals and action, the characters might be the best thing about SR. The actors are all perfect for the role, and the character development is superb. Every single character works within the movie exactly how they were supposed to; Speed Racer is a brilliant example of how casts are teams, not collections. On a more specific note, Trixie might be the best sidekick ever. Christina Ricci (Trixie) stole the show, or at least she would have if everyone else had not done so well. Cinematography You saw the trailer, so you know how beautiful the movie is, but imagine it bigger, better, and more colorful. It is a sight to behold, and the opening to the Casa Cristo 5000 might be the most gorgeous thing in movie history. Seriously. It will take your breath away. I know that to some people, CGI is an automatic turn-off, but this is very creative and well done Action All the races are exciting, emotional, and not to hard to follow. The races struck a great balance between complicated and understandable. They were complex enough to be interesting, but just simple enough to be followed by the viewer. Also, some of the fight scenes outside the cars are pretty cool too, but they are not made with the same quality. Humor Most of the comic relief involved Speed's little brother Spritle and Chim Chim the monkey. It seems pretty stupid, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Not exactly Potter Puppet Pals level of comedic genius, but I'll take it. The jokes did a good job of breaking up the intense action and the deep character interaction. Themes The main themes of SR are family values, cheating is bad, and corporate corruption ruining the spirit of competition. I liked all these. GOGO |
