I went to catch this before work. Saw the first show of the day. I've been somewhat excited, but not super stoked, to see this movie. Some friends were saying that Robert Downey Jr. was a bad choice for the role as Stark, but they couldn't have been more wrong.
They changed some things about the origin of Iron Man, but I liked it. I don't like things directly taken all the time, putting it's own swing on it was a great way to bring Iron Man to life. It actually takes a while for Iron Man to appear on screen, but it's perfectly fine that it does. Robert Downey Jr. plays the party hard, rich playboy Tony Stark perfectly. I can't really think of someone else to play him after seeing it. He made the movie. He was the movie.
Supporting cast is also amazing. Terrance Howard as Rhodey was good, and there is a scene where they indicate War Machine for the sequel, and that I can't wait for. Also, the appearance after the credits sets up an entire franchise which, if they make them all this good, will be quite a set of films. There was even applauding for it when it happened. Pepper, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, did a great job at keeping Stark on his toes. The chemistry between Paltrow and Downey Jr. was perfect. When they were together, they were brilliant. Yet both Paltrow and Howard were underused. When I saw the poster, and the name Jeff Bridges and saw the faces, I couldn't place him. When I he came on screen, one thing I couldn't get out of my mind was him with long hair and a bath robe. But I think that was just me. Although, the day before I did see a guy wearing a shirt that said "Nobody fudges With The Jesus" buying a ticket for Iron man. But aside from that, he did a great job as Stark Industries business man.
The action was something I was wondering about since the director was somewhat unfamiliar to me. Elf and Zathura weren't exactly my kind of films. But he does pull it off. The action sequences I felt were actually the lower part of the movie for me. No, I didn't dislike them, but compared to the rest of the movie, it wasn't quite as well directed. The action sequences were entertaining though, and the SFX were amazing. Great eye-candy.
Not only could this movie be an action, it was also a comedy. Downey Jr. was hilarious throughout the entire film. There were times the entire theatre was crying out in laughter. The humor was so well placed and the timing was like a good comedy. Especially the scenes between Stark and Pepper.
The ending was great. I felt a complete satisfaction when the credits started to roll. I can't wait for this to become a franchise as long as they keep making the movies this good. It also made me even more excited to see The Incredible Hulk coming out in June.
Overall, this film is fully worth it. Extremely entertaining throughout the entire film, not a boring part in the entire movie. It's 126 minutes, and didn't seem like it. It's definitely a FULL PRICE movie. Go see this movie. Best movie so far this year.
