Could not agree more with your opinion. 100% from me too. So far I've seen all Best Picture and Best Director contenders and for me Life of Pi would be a most deserved winner for Best Director.... 1 Replies | Report Abuse absolutely - I am still reviewing this film in my head... and smiling. So much natural humor and just plain great filmmaking - for me this will be a hard choice between this and Lincoln for all the oscar hardware - both are worthy. 1 Replies | Report Abuse ..and it got the Best Director Award ! :) 0 Replies | Report Abuse Well written review. While I didn't enjoy it as much as you did, it was still a beautiful film and a remarkable one. 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to read the review - indeed a remarkable film! 0 Replies | Report Abuse I gave it 90% and I loved your review... excellent movie! 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Panta - nothing wrong with a 90 either - it still says that this is a wonderful film and more than worth the watch. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

Now you made me totally interested in this one (It's quite a rare thing to see a 100% from you :) ) Definitely a must see then ! 1 Replies | Report Abuse I don't give them lightly - that's for sure. And as I mentioned, no film is perfect - but this film struck me in so many ways - a true bit of art from start to finish. I truly hope you enjoy this as much as I - it will be interesting to get the perspective of a non american on this one. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Nice review... just added it to my list! 1 Replies | Report Abuse hope you enjoy it as much as I did ! 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

i have not seen it, but since I am interested in this period of the history, I may give it a try. 1 Replies | Report Abuse please do - the performances are excellent. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I haven't seen this, but I am surprised by your high rating. A lion, as you know, is feline. You are canine. You should despise this film. 1 Replies | Report Abuse good one Grouchy. I set my instincts aside for this one. Would history be different if they had called him Richard the dog hearted instead of lion hearted? 0 Replies | Report Abuse im not a big fan of melodrama, and this seems like the king (or queen sounds more appropriate) of melodrama, phantasm review though 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks for reading. As Shakespeare often drifts into melodrama, so does this film - but there is so much more going on - all the political intrigue and the fantastic acting that I still recommend this. 0 Replies | Report Abuse brilliant review. I should see this 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Steve - and yes, you should see this - the acting is quite superb. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Nice review Max! It's another one of those I remember watching on a wet rainy Sunday afternoon when I was young... 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Andy - aren't those sweet memories of youth? I have similar ones. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I had never heard of this film before, I will definitely be seeing it now, I can't wait to see O'Toole, Hepburn and young Dalton and Hopkins, great cast! Excellent review Max! 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Jack! Hope you enjoy it. If you haven't heard of this, then you probably haven't heard of A Man For Al Seasons either - another excellent period piece - I believe Paul Scofield won best actor in 1966 for his role as Sir Thomas More (chanceller to Henry VIII). 1 Replies | Report Abuse No I haven't heard of that one either...looks like I've got a lot to see! thanks for the tip max 1 Replies | Report Abuse Never saw this, but I will have to check it out. Great review. 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Simon - and yes, you do need to check it out. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Great Review! 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks for reading Alex. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Well written review, Max for a classic. 1 Replies | Report Abuse yes, indeed a classic! thanks for commenting TS. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

Yes, I loved this movie. Great review. 0 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Simon - glad we agree - at the end of the film I just sat there with my brain numb thinking "wow". 0 Replies | Report Abuse I've heard pieces from the score, but that's it. 1 Replies | Report Abuse the score is as wonderful as the rest of the film - it moves slowly but the payoff is well worth it. 0 Replies | Report Abuse great review! this sounds kind of interesting 1 Replies | Report Abuse interesting is putting it mildly - I've intentionally left out lots of really interesting things in the review - you'll just have to check it out for yourself. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Sometimes I develop an irrational, unfair prejudice against a movie. I remember seeing a picture of Nicole Kidman's ludicrous fake nose in this movie, and instantly taking a dislike to it. I guess I should overcome that and check it out. Nice work, dog. p.s. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I know what you're saying - I just see Julia Roberts and cringe. But seriously, this is an excellent film. You know that the whole chocolate is toxic to dogs is a myth perpetrated by cats! 0 Replies | Report Abuse Fantastic film that succeeds on every possible level. Great review! 1 Replies | Report Abuse couldn't agree more Bill - thanks for reading. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I heard about this movie and I want to see it because it has a music score by Philip Glass. Great review. :) 1 Replies | Report Abuse the score is only one reason to check this out - the acting is quite stirring and the interconnecting story lines compelling. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I agree with you that The Hours has much higher cinematographic value than Chicago... It really blows up your mind and makes you think about it long after you've seen it ! Again you've captured most of my feelings for a movie I've seen. 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Maksim - makes you think about it long after you've seen it... exactly! 0 Replies | Report Abuse Great review and thanks for bringing this to my attention 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Steve - hope you get a chance to check this out - it is a marvelous film. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Seems pretty interesting. Good work 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks - hope I've motivated you to give this a view. 0 Replies | Report Abuse good review, doesnt sound too bad 1 Replies | Report Abuse it isn't bad at all if you take the time to let it get under your skin. check it out when you're in a reflective mood. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Good review! 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks for reading 0 Replies | Report Abuse Great Review! Excellent review! 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Panta - interesting looking back at this almost 4 year old review... so much for Hope - guess we all got fooled again (as Daltry sang). Though I'm not going to blame the pres for all the issues - the Rep Senate has done a swell job squashing anything that would make the dems look good - even if it hurts the country to do so! 1 Replies | Report Abuse That's the name of the game... to get another 4 years to full the people... nothing else... 2 Replies | Report Abuse |

Inglourious Basterds (2009) |

I enjoyed this but I thought it was one of Q.T.'s lesser films, my main problem was with the narrative flow, I felt it wasn't divided well enough between the characters, I felt the Basterds should have got much more screen time as they were the titular characters...anyway great review of a great film, I thought it was much better than Avatar and The Hurt Locker... 1 Replies | Report Abuse I agree with your assessment - the Basterds weren't really the focus of the film (it was more about the jew hunter, really) - which is probably why I thought the scenes in the theatre with the Basterds went on too long -just wasn't emotionally vested in the charactors. I'm glad you agree that this film should have beat Hurt Locker. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I know I'm in the minority, but I just don't get all the fuss about Tarantino. Nice review though. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I feel the same way about Scorscese. Cape Fear was a mess - and Stupid Island, while having some nice artsy shots, had continuity problems and a very weak script (which I suppose you can't blame on the director). Inglorious shows true craft - great camera work and artestry - that Tarantino often tweaks what you're expecting is either extreme hubris or someone in control of his craft - taking chances and having fun. 0 Replies | Report Abuse QT is among my favorite directors. It is hard for me to decide which film is my favorite, but this film is definitely up there. Great review. 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks Sparky, other than the Grindhouse (which I understood, yet couldn't really appreciate) I don't think that there's a QT film that I didn't like (can't say that about most directors). 0 Replies | Report Abuse Very good review. I liked this one very much. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Thanks for reading Simon - I was very entertained by this film - and Waltz was a marvel. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Good Review. 1 Replies | Report Abuse thank you Bharat - I'm glad you took the time to read the review. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Great review 1 Replies | Report Abuse thank you sir. I appreciate it. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Nice review, I liked this one quite a bit. 1 Replies | Report Abuse cool, glad you enjoyed the film - I thought it was very innovative and a lot of fun. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Once again Max you do a great job not only on the review but with your score as well. Keep it up buddy 1 Replies | Report Abuse I just use my reviewer's dartboard for the score. thanks for the high praise, I appreciate it. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Good work, however, I wasn't very touched by this picture. For me it was an average summer movie 1 Replies | Report Abuse sorry it didn't work for you - I dunno, I've seen so many lousy films, that the "average" is pretty low - and this for me was well above that. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Great review!! One of my favorite movies!! 1 Replies | Report Abuse cool - glad you liked both the film and the review. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Great great review! I didn't review this one but it was a really nice experience. I wasn't blown away but it met my expectations. 1 Replies | Report Abuse thanks! Glad you enjoyed the review (and the film as well). 0 Replies | Report Abuse Nice review Max! 1 Replies | Report Abuse thank you Andy. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

I do not know what is wrong with me... I have no urge to see this movie. I think I can wait for it on cable. But I do trust your opinion. I am so conflicted! :) And I'm not a huge non-conformist for non-conformists sake. What is my problem with my excitement level (or lack of)? I dunno. Very Nice review as always Maxthesax. :)

Samantha - do yourself a favor and see it on the big screen!!! As many a critic has mentioned (including Roger Ebert) this film will probably pale down to a "better than ok" film on DVD - while it is stunning and mindblowing on the big screen - there's no substitution for the immersion factor that the big screen provides. If there was any film meant to be seen on the biggest, baddest, clearest screen possible - it's this one.

lolol you seem panic-stricken! :) ok, you convinced me. I trust your opinion. I'm sure I have a couple weeks, in particular at the theater nearest me. They tend to show movies til everyone else has swapped 'em out for newer stuff.

there's the old saw - you only get to experience things for the first time once. So you can have a fair experience, or.... a really good one - that's all I'm saying.I do hope you enjoy it!!!I'm going to see it again this Tuesday in standard 2d - just for fun.

You're extremely articulate. If there is one thing bad I can say about your reviews is that they're over before I want them to be. Keep them coming!

thank you Madison for your kind words. I started doing these reviews as more of a mental process (and also to help me to recall points in the films I've seen - don't you hate it when you see a title and then wonder if you've seen it before?).To me, it's all about impressions, rather than an in depth, under the microscope viewing of a film - I don't want to experience my films that way; I'd much rather let them wash over me, and then contemplate what I've seen afterwards,

Not one seen? I already know what scenes. Everything was perfect but one of the beginning shots. When it first shows the soldiers. I could tell it was fake. I thought District 9's animation in real world was better.

hmm, I think I know which scene you are referring to - I was probably still trying to adjust my 3D glasses, so I'm giving that a pass. I enjoyed Dist 9's "film at 11:00" style, but it did not suck me into the alien world the way Avatar did. Both are very good films - I gave Dist a 90 and Avatar one of my few 100's, because for me it was groundbreaking and I was totally immersed.
