While largely missing out on its intoxicating opening of videogame badguys coping with the fact they never get to be the hero, Wreck-It Ralph is a surprisingly heartwarming and clever film that kids and parents will both enjoy. The film does have a dozen or so homages (though most are in the trailer) to classic arcade gaming but spends much of its second and third acts in a race game world that is basically the boardgame Candyland come to life. Despite the obnoxiously cutsie setting the many reveals about the character Vanellope von Schweetz are pretty clever and keep the audience attentive. Not the great Arcade game movie I'm sure many fans were hoping for, Wreck-It Ralph is still a great family film that could be the best animated film this year.
