LAIKA delivers a solid follow-up to their remarkable 2009 hit Coraline and are fast becoming a major player in animation. ParaNorman starts off with a bang as the opening has Norman watching a scary movie with his grandmother, only moments later do we discover that his grandmother has recently died and that Norman can speak with the dead. This concept dominates the first act of the film as we are introduced to the fabulous characters, both dead and alive, that populate Norman's town. Once the zombie/witchcraft elements get going the film loses a bit of its clever charm and it unfortunately ends with a remarkably clique and hammy moral encounter that nearly speaks down to its audience. Even though it loses steam the film has plenty of witty humor and smart dark elements to recommend it.
