Kubricks style is easily seen in this film. You can talk about this film for days and not cover everything. It's slow but brilliant in capturing the visual and spiritual essence of the Clarke's story.

This is one of those era type films that comes along to mark the occasion. Like Gone with the Wind, Star Wars (the first), and the like, this was at the top of its genre. You can read my review of it but watching it first release in the theatre was to mature a film for me at the time. It holds up real well though doesn't it?

My first impression was not the greatest at the time when it was first released. Of course, the films put out at the time were not near the sophistication as 2001, so it was a tough one to watch due to the pacing and beginning/ending.

Excellent insight for I didn't see the parallel of "Sunset..." it does however mock the silent era in a fun kind of way b/c Kelly's character may have been inspired by the Rudolph Valentino character who also was a stunt man before becoming a star. Oh, I love reading about your perspectives on films, I look forward reading more!

yeah, FUN was all about the world back then in these films. You can see it in so many ones that starred these icon actors. If you want to see musicals that uplift the soul, just latch on to these of the time. Anchors Away was another. And on and on and on. Golden good feel films.

The BEST film EVER made is crazy to give to any film. I myself consider Kane to be not all that great at all. Go to Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind or 2001 a Space Odysee for that kind of talk. Citizen Kane was and is a very good film and that is all. Besides, how about my Casablanca, that isn't crap and should be far above Kane stuff.

"Scorsese, who establishes the camera as a window into Travis subconscious" awesome description and totally agree about alienation for he's totally oblivious about Americas popular past times particularly when Travis was taking Betsy to a porno film just because to him it's only a movie that is no different than say Casablanca. You are right Silent filmmaking is a long lost art form. sadly what is also lost to the ages is F.W Murnau's next film after this Oscar winning classic, FOUR DEVILS [1928]. With less than 20 to 15 % of Silent films that survive to this day and age Film Presvervation is all the more important. And it is important for us film buffs to view the remaining silent greats. I liked the soundtrack so much I ran out an bought it. The film left no doubt that the ordeal Alex went through to 'save' him was as demented as the character he portrayed. One of the many Hitchcock films I have yet to see. Despite not having seen this movie I could tell when a reference is made to it. There's no debating that Hitchcock was a master director, unfortunately the Academy never had the brain to nominate him once.

That's a very good point. This film sort of 'created' the sense of atmosphere for films with Italian themes. It's a brilliant film.

Completely agreed; this idiosyncratic gem was such a breath of fresh air, even given its flaws, but, still, the tension and less-is-more approach were absolutely magnificent. Great review.

I can see your point clearly whereas it contains no plot and relies more on it's visuals or that the plot is only a backdrop to showcase visuals! I was going to see this film but thing is that I wasn't prepared as you're but I'm going to try to watch it again!

I agree with most of your critique. On the really really big screen, not the crap people see today, this one was awesome. I was so impressed I went out and bought the soundtrack. For me, pretty close to being a 100% if not indeed a 100%. But then, I do not do technicalities. Great effort in the review.

Great review but for some reason I can't into Woody Allen films in general since his outside exterior is not the most appealing, yet he's able to be with girls who're more attractive than he is!

Allen is and was a loser in real life when it came to women. Were it not for his real life celebrity opening doors to Keaton and others, he couldn't attract anyone... he would be the first to admit that I am sure. He, at least, was self deprecating and honest enough to realize that.

Excellent review! I have heard this was a great "road movie" and that it Dennis Hopper's most prestigious piece of work. I've just watched Speed with him as an actor, but I didn't know he also directed Easy Rider. I will definitely check it out!

Having seen this one first run ever in a theatre setting on a really really huge screen... well it was great. At the time there was a great hatred of nonconformity, especially in hair or dress. It was an anti establishment, or so called counter-culture movement represented by Hopper and Fonda that could enrage some townsfolk in the film. Hence the violent ending. Classic soundtrack Born to be Wild theme song by Steppenwolf was so appropriate in the begining.

No ones can quite match Luc Besson direction for action. It's just unfortunate he been unable to give us anything as great recently. Though I still have faith he will make one as good soon enough. Nice review.
