    • Flixster bought Rotten Tomatoes and changed it. A Rotten Development if I ever saw one.
    • Now, the Smurfs movie looks incredibly stupid, as would any other live action/CGI cartoon movie coming out, but I noticed something - Smurfette's going to be voiced by Katy Perry and the Easter Bunny in Hop by Russell Brand. Since they're both married and voicing CGI characters with huge eyes, why not?

I told you so. Now I'm going to have to deal with deleting over 300 messages, rating the movies you didn't know I saw, and put up with these blank ads Flixster has butchered Rotten Tomatoes with.  Pretty soon this site is going to lose more members than before. Oh well, I am back, but I still suggest that you join Listal. Only a few people answered me, so, when in doubt...

LISTAL! LISTAL! LISTAL! YOU CAN RATE MOVIES! TV SHOWS! GAMES! DVDS! ACTORS! MORE! NO HASSLE! NO POP-UP ADS! CLICK HERE NOW! Or the kitten gets it.

Also, I can see that the community/friend Tomatometers on every movie page have turned into Flixster stars. I've suddenly forgotten which site I'm using.

The flixster ratings are terrible and they have them next to the critics rating as if they're both equally reliable.

Well, I saw Hereafter, which I appreciated for what it was, and now I'm ready to quit. Not permanently, I'll only be back before Rango arrives. I won't even stay away from this site, I'll only use it to check if a movie is good or not. Except I will not be able to check what ratings the critics gave the films because Flixster...

    *sigh*

    Flixster.

Flixster is the main cause of all this. I didn't whine when Kraft took the British culture out of Cadbury - they've already done bad things to themselves, like decide to shut down their Somerset factory, and make their Caramel Bunny look like a prostitute. Rotten Tomatoes only hired Armond White and that's it. What else did they do wrong, Flixster? Nothing, but you did. You broke it and left it broken. You wouldn't bring back the PNG images, you wouldn't fix the groups, you wouldn't sort out the negative 60% rating problem even though I asked you to, you wouldn't allow me to add Kesha or Justin Bieber to my Crap Celebrities list, you wouldn't let me see all of my friends' activity, and if you don't fix the critic ratings or bring back the ability to add anything to a list at the best time, then you are doomed. Good thing I saw Tangled at a special screening, because I was able to add it to my Best Animated Features list before you changed RT's layout. Maybe I shouldn't talk to you like this, because you're going to be laughing anyway.

I am disgusted with this new layout, mainly because I can't stand to see the horrifying sight of Flixster's popcorn tub using the original tomato as its slave. Now we all know why it's ridiculous to cover popcorn in ketchup. And now that one food has taken over the other, I'm so glad that I usually take sweets with me to the cinema. Just look at the audience Rotten Tomatoes had - they were smart. They knew Twilight and Alvin and the Chipmunks weren't good films. Flixster picks up fangirls who prefer both to classics like Rocky, E.T. and Chicken Run. When I posted a blog about this, people either didn't care or got pissed off. The petition didn't work, and Flixster will not answer your comments because they're selfish hogs. Like billionare hackers. There will be a higher chance that Rotten Tomatoes and anti-IGN will become one and will lose hundreds of shockingly angry members.

So I'll be leaving until March 1st. If you want to see what I think of The Fighter, True Grit or Paul, squash the tomato and give Listal the attention it deserves. You'll write reviews without having to deal with trolls, you can make complex lists quicker than you can imagine, and you can rate so much more than movies.

Click here, for the love of God.

    2D or not 2D?

    Posted on 01/27/11 06:09 AM | Last edited on 01/27/11 06:09 AM

CGI is becoming easier to do than 2D animation, despite it still existing in anime, ads, cartoons and even some Disney movies. So we're getting many characters changed into CGI, like Mickey Mouse, Winnie-the-Pooh, Tinkerbell, Road Runner and Punchy. They've been CG'd before, mainly in video games, but sometimes it makes them too realistic. Take Jeeves, the Vlasic Stork and the Silentnight characters for example. Because CGI is becoming easier to use, ads are rushed in CGI, and often made into an Alvin and the Chipmunks style. Might be due to the Nielsen ratings on live-action ads being more effective than animation. And saying the name of Alvin and the Chipmunks brings me to this list.

Due to the popularity of CGI, and the fact that Robin Williams' Popeye was released in the early 80's, people are doing to cartoon/fantasy comic creatures what Steven Spielberg did to Dino - give them the 'CG Eyes'. Although a movie adaptation of The Smurfs had been in development when Scooby-Doo was released, Alvin boosted the craze to make it go too far. And I say it goes too far because none of these films are critical successes. Here's my comparsions between the old and the new, to see how faithful they really are.

    Howard the Duck (1986)

    Howard T. Duck

    VOICE ACTOR: Chip Zien

POSITIVE: He's a puppet/suit. But then again, this was the 80's.

NEGATIVE: Human-like eyes, pro-bestiality message is more effective, not nearly as angry, high on duck puns

    FAITH FACTOR: 4/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 6/10

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

    Raphael, Michaelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo

VOICE ACTORS: Josh Pais, Robbie Rist, Corey Feldman, Brian Tochi

POSITIVE: Made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, same attitude, same charm

NEGATIVE: Often weak facial expressions. That's all I can say.

    FAITH FACTOR: 9/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 4/10

    The Flintstones (1994)

    Dino

VOICE ACTOR: Mel Blanc (recordings taken from original TV show)

POSITIVE: Was a puppet made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop in the first movie

NEGATIVE: Reason for all future talking animals having bug-eyes

    FAITH FACTOR: 8/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 5/10

    Casper (1995)

    Casper and the Ghostly Trio

VOICE ACTORS: Malachi Pearson, Joe Nipote, Joe Alaskey, Brad Garrett

POSITIVE: The first appearance of the ghosts' current, wonderful designs

NEGATIVE: Do all ghosts in the movie have to look cartoony?

    FAITH FACTOR: 9/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 2/10

    George of the Jungle (1997)

    An Ape Named Ape

    VOICE ACTOR: John Cleese

POSITIVE: Jim Henson again, tamer than the other realistic renditions

NEGATIVE: John Cleese shines but deserves better

    FAITH FACTOR: 8/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 2/10

Baby Huey's Great Easter Adventure (1998)

    Baby Huey

    VOICE ACTOR: Unknown

POSITIVE: They got the design right

NEGATIVE: Should've been a theme park costume

    FAITH FACTOR: 9/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 3/10

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000)

    Rocky and Bullwinkle

VOICE ACTORS: June Foray, Keith Scott

POSITIVE: Considering that these characters had been transported outside the cartoon world, they stay completely true to their designs. Also, Rocky is still voiced by June Foray.

NEGATIVE: There was a weasel in the movie who was 2D animated, so why not these guys?

    FAITH FACTOR: 9/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 1/10

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

    The Grinch

    ACTOR: Jim Carrey

POSITIVE: Very neat make-up, creeped me out as a child which makes him very effective, it's Jim Carrey!

NEGATIVE: Jim Carrey's absurdity might be too much for some

    FAITH FACTOR: 6/10

UGLINESS FACTOR: Ugly like a Grinch should be.

    Scooby-Doo (2002)

    Scooby-Doo

    VOICE ACTOR: Neil Fanning

POSITIVE: Most of the design is accurate, spot-on voicework

NEGATIVE: Bug-eyes, fart jokes, Scrappy Doo (Scott Innes) urinates on someone

FACT: In Looney Tunes: Back in Action, the 2D Scooby and Shaggy complained to Matthew Lillard about his performance in the movie.

    FAITH FACTOR: 4/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 8/10

The Cat in the Hat (2003)

    The Cat

    ACTOR: Mike Myers

POSITIVE: Very neat make-up, didn't creep me out as much as the Grinch

NEGATIVE: Way too Austin Powers to be true

    FAITH FACTOR: 2/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 5/10

    The Fish

    VOICE ACTOR: Sean Hayes

POSITIVE: In better character than the Cat

NEGATIVE: Bug eyes, no explanation for sudden change of appearance

    FAITH FACTOR: 7/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 9/10

    Garfield: The Movie (2004)

    Garfield

    VOICE ACTOR: Bill Murray

    POSITIVE: Eyes aren’t as bug-like

NEGATIVE: Other characters don’t look the same, fart jokes, unfunny

FACT: Bill Murray hated his job voicing Garfield so much that he said that it was his one regret in his Zombieland cameo. Never have a name that matches a better writer, and this goes to you, Joel Cohen.

    FAITH FACTOR: 5/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 2/10

    Underdog (2007)

    Underdog

    VOICE ACTOR: Jason Lee

POSITIVE: Clips from the original cartoon appear at the beginning.

NEGATIVE: Not the same character, looks ridiculous, way too realistic, can be either live-action or CGI.

    FAITH FACTOR: 2/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 9/10

    Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007)

    The Chipmunks

VOICE ACTORS: Justin Long/Ross Bagdasarian Jr., Matthew Gray Gubler/Steve Vining, Jesse McCartney/Janice Karman

POSITIVE: Their cuteness kind of improves in the sequel, you can actually tell that they are chipmunks this time, their songs can get pretty catchy...

NEGATIVE: Hoodies, bug-eyes, fart jokes, every picture of Alvin uses the same face

FACT: This movie was such a financial (if not critical) success that it was the real reason why we got the Yogi Bear movie.

    FAITH FACTOR: 4/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 5-7/10

    The Chipettes

VOICE ACTRESSES: Amy Poehler/Courtney Galiano, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate

POSITIVE: More face poses in the marketing, sometimes kinda cute, and too girlish for fart jokes. Also, Miley Cyrus rejected her role.

NEGATIVE: Still have the bug-eyes and modern culture. Also appeared in the nude, which unlike the male chipmunks could be an excuse for more porn.

FACT: Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks was a live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks movie that was released direct-to-video, but this one had puppets that were actually faithful.

    FAITH FACTOR: 5/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 5/10

    Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins (2009)

    Scooby-Doo

    VOICE ACTOR: Frank Welker

POSITIVE: Less ugly than the last one, and more true to the design. Also, this didn’t stop Scooby from being 2D forever.

NEGATIVE: Still involves in fart jokes.

    FAITH FACTOR: 6/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 2/10

    Marmaduke (2010)

    Marmaduke

    VOICE ACTOR: Owen Wilson

POSITIVE: Proves a better reason why it makes sense for a cartoon character to stay as one when being converted to CGI.

NEGATIVE: The original Marmaduke never talked, made friends, farted, danced, surfed or even wore sunglasses!

    FAITH FACTOR: 0/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 10/10

    The Last Airbender (2010)

    Appa and Momo

    VOICE ACTORS: Dee Bradley Baker

POSITIVE: Almost exactly the same as the originals, only Appa's eyes are more realistic and Momo has more a bit more brown

NEGATIVE: Damn you, M. Night Shamaylan.

    FAITH FACTOR: 10/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 3/10

    Yogi Bear (2010)

    Yogi and Boo-Boo

VOICE ACTORS: Dan Ankroyd, Justin Timberlake

POSITIVE: Mostly equal to the original designs, Justin Timberlake sounds exactly like Boo-Boo, unchanged personalities

NEGATIVE: Bug-eyes, Dan Ankroyd isn’t perfect as Yogi, Yogi dances to hip-hop, most of the marketing has only one face pose for both bears

    FAITH FACTOR: 7/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 7/10

    The Smurfs (2011)

    The Smurfs

    The Smurfs

VOICE ACTORS: Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Anton Yelchin, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Gary Basaraba, John Oliver, Paul Reubens, Kenan Thompson, B. J. Novak, Jeff Foxworthy, Wolfgang Puck

POSITIVE: Eyes can get too realistic, Greedy Smurf seems pretty racist due to his voice casting, George Lopez never involved in a good movie, Katy Perry, had to end up like Giselle in New York, raunchy/crude humour including fart jokes and a joke that's supposedly about pubic hair

NEGATIVE: Eyes can get too realistic, Greedy Smurf seems pretty racist due to his voice casting, Katy Perry, had to end up like Giselle in New York

    FAITH FACTOR: 5/10

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 3-6/10

    Mighty Mouse (2013)

    Mighty Mouse

    Mighty Mouse

    VOICE ACTOR: TBA

POSITIVE: The movie will be completely animated, has a new logo on his chest

NEGATIVE: Bug-eyes, lost a slightly more faithful design, CGI ‘tude, seems like The Tale of Desperaux on crack

    FAITH FACTOR: N/A

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 7/10

    Mr. Peabody and Sherman (2014)

    Mr. Peabody

    Mr. Peabody

    VOICE ACTOR: Robert Downey Jr.

POSITIVE: Looking at the concept art, DreamWorks would never do it wrong. Here's looking at you, Sony.

NEGATIVE: Might use the DreamWorks face the typical way instead of the 'intelligent' way

    FAITH FACTOR: N/A

    UGLINESS FACTOR: 0/10

And the winner for Least Faithful Adaptation is MARMADUKE

This is exactly why I want to give The Squeakquel a chance.

If they make a live-action Pokemon movie, I doubt that any of the original 151, from Bulbasaur to Mew could be rendered plausibly in CGI. And the Ninja Turtles-the costumes on the first two movies were good, but the ones on the third movie sucked.

    Mood:
    Bored

I'm sure many of you will disagree with me, but you're never going to enlighten my sense of humour if you try to correct me. Not everyone likes it.  This might lose me some friends...

Overtime, I have watched a few videos from That Guy With The Glasses, and the flaws of the site became more clear to me. I started to lose my sense of humour towards it, and stopped watching it. The Cinema Snob is admittedly the funniest on the site, even if he yells too much nowadays, yet the Nostalgia Critic doesn't really appeal to me anymore because what he's doing has made him lose his voice twice in his internet existence. He also turns his head to the right for absolutely no reason whatsover when he talks. The reviewing style of him and most of the other people on ThatGuy was never intended to be real reviewing, and that's exactly the problem. It's better to waste 20 minutes of your time watching a bad movie including riffs, yet Doug often goes too far and spoils his guilty pleasures. The one positive thing about this is that it differs from his sarcastic review of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, where he said negative things about the show just so he could get more money. But this is extremely negative because we get spoiled over a movie that might have gotten decent reviews from real critics, such as Conan the Barbarian and Commando. Doug must include a spoiler warning before these kinds of reviews, because he already does it before his Bum Reviews. When he concluded his reviews of Theodore Rex and The Room, he told us to see them when we already saw them in 20 minutes. It's a good thing I deleted my Don Bluth reviews, because I was a huge fanboy until now.

The other flaws about his reviews are the constant uses of running gags, storylines and cameos. Doug himself is sick of the Zuul gag, but not the celebrity phone calls or Chuck Norris. I think Chuck Norris is one of the worst memes on the internet. Storylines and reviews do not mix unless the review has involvement in the story or it isn't forced, and the ending of his review for The Garbage Pail Kids Movie is just audiovisual whining. One of the problems with the Nostalgia Critic's review of The Room was that the cameos of Linkara and Spoony were forced and unnecessary, as if they were being attention whores. The review itself was so flawed that fanboys never noticed and boycotted Tommy Wiseau dressed as the Nostalgia Critic when Wiseau sued Doug over using his footage. There are currently over 500 cameos in the history of Channel Awesome, and it gets old real fast. it doesn't matter if the character has a stiff neck (Film Brain), overreacts (Angry Joe) or whose career is devolving (Spoony). It only matters when it comes to the Distressed Watcher, and he's the downright worst on the site. Except he's not the only one who isn't original.

The Nostalgia Critic seems to unintentionally copy the format of British comedians he doesn't know about like Harry Hill or Charlie Brooker, as well as Film Brain, except he knows about them because he is British. Noah Antweiler has never admitted the influence comic book character Doktor Sleepless has had on his Doctor Insano character, and neither has Doug, because I don't think he knows about the original Bum or the original Ask That Guy. Kickassia also gets worse the second time around, since to this day Doug has never talked about Kick-Ass. Kickassia is also nothing but 90+ minutes of people playing around, making fun of movies, making pointless references to The Simpsons and forcing cameos into their movie, even if they make jokes about them. Also, Doug has sold a DVD of Kickassia, when we can already watch it online for free. It still gives him money, though, since the majority of people on the site use Blip, using a crapload of irritating advertising that we do not want to see and is barely skippable.

You know why I'm one of the only ones out of my friends who doesn't hate FernGully? It's because the Nostalgia Critic and Chick did. I never even wanted to watch his review of Waterworld - I just wanted to wait until its next airing on SyFy. I would respect an opinion on TGWTG, but many people seem to overblow it and won't stop making videos about him or involving him in yaoi. I had a YouTube channel called TheWorstMoviesEver (now TheWMEforever), and I copied the style of the Nostalgia Critic at times, but at least I was actually uploading the full movies and not completely reviewing them. Many people seem to copy Channel Awesome these days, and I regret doing so because every review these days has to be fake. It seems that in the future, the only reviews we will ever get will be videos of people playing characters that we should be enforced to trust. The Nostalgia Critic is becoming the next Twilight! Sure, you may think I'm jealous of him, because he has more money and popularity than me, but, honestly. Not to be homophobic, but do I sound like I want a hyperactive fanbase that will treat me as if I'm gay?

Welcome to the future of opinion, my friends. If you want, you can go and hate on me just because I hate these people. Angry Joe did it too.

Yes, all of That Guy With The Glasses has been slipping recently. It was funny even when he mocked bad movies that I liked (i.e., Pokemon the First Movie) and I actually started watching some of the bad movies that he reviewed because of it. I also got back into AoSTH (and into SatAM) because of Doug. However, six months into using the site, the appeal has diminished. After so many times that Bison has said "Of course" to announce a world takeover plot and hearing JesuOtaku's cold indifference, I feel the site has lost much of its initial appeal. Even other sites like CineMassacre (which hosts the Angry Video Game Nerd) are also losing ground to user-created reviews. So, I agree with you. Web video reviews have lost a lot of the charm that made them unique at first, and not enough is being done to keep them fresh and funny.

    Why Flixster's community sucks

    Posted on 07/31/10 07:14 AM | Last edited on 07/31/10 07:14 AM

    Mood:
    Rotten

One of the problems I want RT to fix immediately is the community. RT is smart, but Flixster ain't. There are so many people who care more about action, crappy singing and character appearances than charm, date or suspense. Just look at the Rotten Tomatoes pages for these films (except the HSM trilogy) and check out what the community thinks).

The Twilght Saga: 82%, 78%, 74% (Fresh) - The critics give them Rotten - I give the first one 1/10

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: 76% (Fresh) - The critics give it 20% - I give it 1/10

    The High School Musical trilogy - 77%, 76%, 76% (Fresh) - I give the first one 0/10

    Camp Rock - 77% (Fresh)

The Disney Channel tween 3D concerts - 72%, 64% (Fresh) - The critics agreed with one but not the other

    2012 - 63% (Fresh) - The critics give it 39% - I give it 0/10

    All Air Buddies movies except for Space - 73%, 69%, 61% (Fresh) - I give them 0-2/10

    Hitman - 61% (Fresh) - The critics give it 14% - I give it 2/10

Major Payne - 69% (Fresh) - The critics give it 30%

The Fast and the Furious - 81% (Fresh) - The critics give it 53% - IMDB score is 6.0/10 - Listal score is 5.9/10 - I give it 5/10

White Chicks - 62% (Fresh) - The critics give it 15%

Alvin and the Chipmunks - 73% (Fresh) - The critics give it 27% - I give it 5/10

    Cocoon - 55% (Rotten) - The critics give it 77% - I give it 9/10

    The Hunt for Gollum - 46% (Rotten) - I give it 10/10

    Whirlpool - 55% (Rotten) - The critics give it 88% - I give it 8/10

Birth of a Nation - 58% (Rotten) - The critics give it 100%

Matinee - 52% (Rotten) - The critics give it 92%

    Crocodile Dundee - 55% (Rotten) - The critics give it 88% - I give it 8/10

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - 43% (Rotten) - The critics give it 72% - I give it 8/10

    Chicken Run - 53% (Rotten) - The critics give it 96% - I give it 10/10

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 52% (Rotten) - The critics give it 82% - I give it 8/10

    I Love You Phillip Morris - 57% (Rotten) - The critics give it 74% - I give it 10/10

James and the Giant Peach - 55% (Rotten) - The critics give it 93% - I give it 9/10

    Antz - 47% (Rotten) - The critics give it 95% - I give it 10/10

    Appaloosa - 55% (Rotten) - The critics give it 76% - I give it 8/10

    Coogan's Bluff - 48% (Rotten) - The critics give it 100% - I give it 8/10

Tell Them Who You Are - 52% (Rotten) - The critics give it 87%

    49 Up - 57% (Rotten) - The critics give it 97%

    One Hour Photo - 57% (Rotten) - The critics give it 81% - I give it 8/10

    Changing Lanes - 49% (Rotten) - The critics give it 77% - I give it 8/10

    Bataan - 52% (Rotten) - IMDB gives it 7.0/10 - I give it 8/10

    Contraband - 41% (Rotten) - IMDB gives it 7.0/10 - I give it 8/10

A tie between Rocky and E.T. the Extra-Terrestial - 65% - Still fresh but not good enough

There are just so much fanboys or fangirls on Flixster. I don't have any friends on Flixster because a lot of the friends that are recommended to me have weak taste. If you have spotted any shocks, please remind me so that I can add them to this list!

My feelings about the new RT

    Posted on 07/23/10 11:04 AM | Last edited on 07/23/10 11:04 AM

    Mood:
    *Shrug*

Rotten Tomatoes is now turning into Flixster, and there are still things that need to be fixed, like the community ratings. So here's what I like so far in the development stages and what I don't like.

    THE FRESH:

    - More movies: I always felt Rotten Tomatoes was incomplete, because now I can show how much I like An Inspector Calls, Summer Wars, Ice Cold in Alex, etc.

    - No list/blog voting: Although it can still be done on reviews, it's a relief that you can't abuse the negative voting on lists or blogs. Please keep it like this, RT!

    - Foreign titles: Helpful for when you're searching for something which has a different name in your home country. For example, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (Nanny McPhee Returns)

    THE ROTTEN:

    - Mixed communities: The Flixster community has a different taste to that of Rotten Tomatoes, and this can be a problem. For example, 2012 got 48% and now it has 63%, Matinee got Fresh and now it has Rotten. This will lower the chances of agreeing with the community. Plus, isn't it supposed to be the ROTTEN TOMATOES community? Just because it's owned by Flixster, doesn't mean the community is the same!

    - PNG not supported: Come on, Rotten Tomatoes! PNGs are higher in quality than JPGs or GIFs, so why disable them? There is no need to go back to the past.

    - Rating list often ascends or shuffles: I'm sure this will be fixed, but starting like this instead of showing the recent ratings is getting on my nerves.

    - Lists, friends and blog moods are not in alphabetical order: Stop getting me confused!

    - The comment limit has screwed up: It's the same, but it shortened the reviews I posted on my ratings as comments.

All in all, this new update is quite lame. And updates often make things worse. I hope RT can fix the problems someday and keep the good stuff.

Some glitch has happened to me 2 times. When I rated Invictus 90%, it decreased to 0% later on. The same happened with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind when I rated it 100%. And a couple of my friends actually thought I hated them! What's worse, another stupid glitch has happened to me where when I try to delete messages or add something to a list, nothing happens. Listen, RT, it may be technical difficulties, but you need to look into the site more often! Fix these damn glitches!

    Mia and the Migou

    Posted on 03/08/10 08:05 AM | Last edited on 03/08/10 08:05 AM

    `

Yesterday, I went to the National Film Theatre in London to see an animated film from France called Mia and the Migou. It's about a tan-skinned, long-haired (but not for long) girl named Mia who finds that in the rainforest she lives near, there may be monsters. Soon after, she encounters one, a big, friendly one. He calls himself a Migou, and when he speaks, he has a mouth on the front and back of his head. It's not everyday you see a monster like that! She then finds that there is more than one Migou, and this is where the French gain the brains of the Japanese - they turn big and gain the ability to use their eyes to rescue anyone from falling. She also makes friends with an ordinary French kid whose evil father wants to build a hotel where the magical tree that gives the Migous life is. It's a strange, flawed story, I know, but if Hayao Miyazaki could bring so much weirdness, why not? Plus, it's not just made in France, but also in Italy and Taiwan, a country near Japan, so it's no surprise.

It may look like it's for kids, but it isn't necessarily for kids. There is some mature humour and thematic elements. The subtitles don't help, either, because whoever subtitled it added cuss words like "sh*t", "arsehole" and "bastard"! Could you imagine if they did that with My Neighbour Totoro? "Holy sh*t, a bus that looks like a cat!" But still, it's a nice, vibrant, colorful and highly imaginative surprise with a unique style of animation. It's also probably the most environmentally friendly animated film since WALL-E! Reading this, you may be thinking of Avatar. It has an environmental message, a jungle, fantasy creatures, helicopters, a magical tree destruction and a bit of "nature strikes back". And believe it or not, this film came out in France exactly a year before Avatar! Oh boy, have I pissed off you Avatar haters. D:
