I thought that The Dark Knight was going to be good. I was wrong. It was utterly spectacular. I had never thought a superhero movie could be so good. But it was. Between the amazing plot, the amazing acting and the amazing effects, this movie absolutely took my breath away.
The plot of The Dark Knight is one of the best I've ever experienced. While other superhero movies are about shallow, cliched villains that just want "power", The Dark Knight has a villain motivated by the want for anarchy. It's an original, haunting idea, which is made even better by Heath Ledger's awe inspiring performance. Add in an emotional side to Batman, another deep villain, and a pervasive sense of fear, and The Dark Knight becomes a movie that is truly special.
The acting takes the great plot and character development and takes it to another level. Heath Ledger obviously got a lot of hype (and an Oscar) for his performance, and he deserved all of it. He gave a scary, menacing portrayal of The Joker, and he made this movie the quintessential look into a villain's mind. Christian Bale was very good as Batman, and his scenes of deep emotional conflict are his best of the movie. Aaron Eckhart was a very good Two-Face, and he made the change from Harvey Dent to Two-Face in a way that only added to the tension. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gary Oldman were very good in their respective roles as well.
The effects in The Dark Knight are very good, but they don't take anything away from the seriousness of the movie. The semi-truck flip is simply mind-boggling the first time you see it. Also, the Bat-Pod is very cool, as is the sonar used in the climax with The Joker. The effects add the requisite CGI for a superhero movie without going overboard. The cinematography of DP Wally Pfister is exceptional. I just wish I could've seen this in IMAX. It would've been that more mind-boggling.
All in all, The Dark Knight is the best movie I've ever seen. Or at least it was, until Inception came along. Christopher Nolan has outdone himself again. I can't wait for The Dark Knight Rises.
