Summer.....What I want to see the most and what will make all the money UPDATED

    Posted on 05/03/11 02:49 PM | Last edited on 05/03/11 02:49 PM

    Excited

Here's a list of what I want to see the most from top to bottom.  Also the added ventured guess of what it'll make.  I will probably be way off.

As it turns out so far I am WAYYYYY off.  I was off with X-Men, Thor, Pirates, and Green Lantern so far.  It looks as if X-Men may not even make it to the 150 million mark.

Super 8 apparently wasn't expected to make much I guess.  News to me.  I thought everyone and their grandmother wanted to see it.  I won't even come close to my original prejection.  Green Lantern won't come near 220 million, Thor made more than I expected, and I gave people too much credit in thinking that the Hangover Part 2 would do less busniess than the first.  I was wrong for it looks like it will surface almost exactly the same.  So, so far this Summer I suck.I hope I am right with Harry Potter and Cowboys and Aliens.

    1.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2  (350 million)  How could people who love this franchhise not go see this?  Besides, it looks F*#king awesome!

    2.  Super 8 (240 million)  This is the most interesting movie of the Summer by far.  Plus I think it has the potential to make even more than my prediction, but we'll see.

    3.  X-Men:First Class (210 million)  I really can't wait to see this one.  It looks killer and it features Havoc.

    4.  Cowboys and Aliens (165 million)  Looks like something we haven't seen a lot of before.  Plus Harrison Ford as a sheriff should be cool.

    5.  Bad Teacher (150 million)  This just looks really funny.  Diaz looks hot too!

    6.  Green Lantern (220 million)  Kind of curious about this one.  It looks like it will be the best use of actual 3D all summer.

    7.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes (135 million)  I don't know why I want to see this, I just do.

    8.  Captain America (250 million)  I want to see this foor one reason.  Hugo Weaving.

    9.  The Hangover Part 2 (200 million)  I know its gonna suck, but I guess I will see it just to see it.

    10.  Thor (150 million)  Kenneth Branagh is awesome.

I'm only excited about one film coming out in 2011 -- We Need To Talk About Kevin. Loved the book. And I'll see the new Transformers (that one will make money too ... I think Bay must have sold his soul at some point, as there's no other explanation for his constant box office success).

Worst sequels or Prequels of all time

    Irritated

Beverly Hills Cop 3 ( I have the worst at the top.  Watching this movie seriously gives you an in depth look at the psyche of Eddie Murphy.  In every frame of this movie he tries so little to achieve anything that it’s painfully obvious.  Even character actors like returning Judge Reinhold could see the effect that Eddie had on this movie and it even made him look foolish.  The whole production was a large mistake.  No one cared about Axel in this movie.  He’s basically just a careless jerk.  His wisecracking, foul mouth shenanigans are all but gone and his swagger is just pathetic.  It’s a shame because part two signifies everything a sequel needs to do to be great.  It worked on all levels.  It intensified the action, it made the comedy funnier, and it gave the characters more to do.  This one was just too far off in time.  Axel Foley was no longer funny in 1993.  He certainly wasn’t funny at the Wonder World theme park that some idiot screenwriter decided to set the film in.)

Speed 2: Cruise Control (What a great idea for a sequel to one of the best reviewed action movies of all time.  Let’s take away the leading man, any signs of a menacing villain, and put the crisis on board one of the slowest designs of transportation known to mankind, a cruise ship.  Put all that together and you’ve got one boring, tedious movie without any real hints of danger or intensity.  Any movie where the protagonist is chasing down his nemesis while hooked to a jet ski by a fishing pole should probably be passed on.  Even if you are Jason Patrick and you need the paycheck.)

The Phantom Menace (This movie wasn’t Star Wars to me.  I’m sorry it just wasn’t.  I don’t care how many unnecessary cameos of original series characters you throw at me.  They aren’t really relevant.  Jaba wasn’t Jaba, Chewy wasn’t Chewy, and even Yoda wasn’t Yoda. As Yoda would say, “Disastrous kid’s movie it was.”)

Batman and Robin (What can I say about this movie that hasn’t already been said?  Bat nipples, a chubby Batgirl, Arnold in this transgender Robocop costume, and Chris O’Donnell.  Enough said.)

Highlander 2: The Quickening (Almost an unrecognizable sequel from the original.  I personally love the style and mystique of the first one.  It’s dark and fun and reeks of the 80s.  This movie literally makes no sense.  It rewrites the story of the first one leaving you completely lost in the mythology, then gives you some of the cheesiest effects in the past 20 years of cinema.  Total crap)

The Never-ending Story 2 (I stand by this to a key.  This is the worst movie ever made.  Not necessarily the worst sequel ever made because you have to look at the source material from its predecessor to really make that comparison, but I hate every frame of this piece of sh*t.  There's a certain creepiness to a movie in which an evil witch is trying to seduce a 13 year old boy while riding through the woods in a glass cariage.)

Another 48 hours (A sequel needs to be made with more on the mind than just simply money.  Eddie Murphy has never fully recovered from Harlem Knight.  I don’t think he ever will.  This film was simply another road block in his quest to be funny again.  Nolte and Murphy should have read the script before signing on for this one.  They would have found plenty of The Police and James Brown lyrics, just no jokes.)

Weekend at Bernie’s 2 (If this movie was more aware of its stink it might have worked better, but the fact that it actually is trying by giving us a new fresh look at two characters whom I really didn’t think anyone cared to revisit, is what makes this movie so laughable.  Why do we need to see Andrew McCarthy get the girl this time?  Does anyone really care?  Good luck landing some tail with a corpse tied around your ankle.  These two idiots seem to be so comfortable around a dead body that you are wondering how the writers could actually spin the story to make it more interesting.  I’ve got an idea.  How about they simultaneously kill themselves?)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the crystal skull (What a stinker.  Now, this isn’t the worst movie ever made.  It’s just such a disastrous disappointment.  I had an Indiana Jones themed party planned for the night that we all went out to see this movie.  After watching the movie, I canceled the party)

Caddyshack 2 (No Murray, no Dangerfield, no Knight equals highly concentrated doses of Aykroyd, Mason, and Stake.  All in one movie.  And again, Chevy Chase was not allowed to be funny.)

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (I would hardly consider this a sequel.  Not sure what it is actually)

2 Fast 2 Furious (Its almost ridiculous even putting this franchise on this list as to insinuate that any of them were any good.  Seriously, would Walker or Deisel have careers without these movies?  Doubtful.)

Karate Kid 3 (The love fest finally comes to a screeching halt when Daneile-san finally realizes his true love for Miyagi.  Plus the movie just sucks.)

Rocky 5 (A complete and totally downer for a franchise that built itself on showing how your dreams can happen when you defy the odds and confront your demons head on with the heart of a lion and the determination of a stallion.  Then number 5 comes along and with a bad investment deal, the dream is lost and you are homeless.  Thank god for Rocky 6 which closed the franchise with class.)

Bad Boys 2 (An overly-long, obnoxious, loud retread of the underrated first one.  Yes, the first one was, to me anyway, the original “Cop Out” or “The other guys” where as it sort of pokes fun at those types of action comedies.  Bad Boys 2 was just a F#*king mess.)

Major League 2: (Overindulging in its predecessors old jokes while dumbing them down to a PG rated level doesn’t work for me. I guess it's safe to say that Charlie Sheen wasn't exactly "Winning" in this one)

Be Cool (When The Rock is your only saving grace, you have a huge problem on your hands.)

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (I am not sure what has happened to the world that we last saw in the far superior Road Warrior, but I wasn’t intrigued by the battle dome premise when we are supposed to be watching one kick as car chase after another.)

Fletch Lives (A crime against Gregory McDonald’s masterpiece book series.  Why make a sequel to a movie based off a book and not use one of the following books that came after it as the basis for the movie?  And why tell Chevy Chase not to be funny?)

Godfather 3 (What were they all thinking?  Sophia can pull it off sure.  HAHAHAHAHA.  Fat chance)

Father of the bride part 2 (Tired, silly, goofy retread of the same character puns and jokes only stretched to the point of self deprecation.)

American Wedding (Why were there so many plot holes in this self declared international espionage thriller?  Why?  Why could I not follow the story of Jim and Michelle?)

Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions (An example of straight up losing sight, inspirations, focus, and creativity all in the span of the time it takes to write two scripts.  One genius and groundbreaking, one a heaping pile of unimaginative garbage.)

Jason X (This really is so bad its good.  It’s hysterically funny whether it sets out to be or not.)

Teen Wolf Too (Underneath all that fur was a lovable mediocre leading man.  Who ‘da thunk it)

Dumb and Dumberer (should hardly be considered as a film let alone a sequel or prequel to anything.

Jaws: The revenge (Mario Van Peebles rastaman steals the movie right out from under the animatronic shark fin.  Because in the end, all people really want to see is Van Peebles.

Superman 3 (Can anyone have told me honestly without having seen Office Space where the plot of this movie is explained, what the hell was going on in Superman 3?)

Superman 4:The quest for peace (At this point we are missing Richard Pryer in an oversized cowboy hat.)

Halloween 3 (Why not just have titled this movie its own subtitle?  “Season of the witches”.  I know, I know.  To lay stake in the franchise name.  But if all anyone is going to do after having watched this festering turd is bitch at you for wasting their time, why do it?)

The Exorcist 2 (A strange and eerie follow up at best.  Completely ruining the original with every frame, it plows through with a certain amount of F#*k you to fans of its predecessor.)

    My personal favorites of 2010

    Top ten

    1.  The Social Network - I realize that its not a large stretch from many critics and moviegoers that this is my favorite, but what can I say?  It was a revalation to me and another piece of brilliance from David Fincher.  Everything from the editing to the screenplay to the performances were just so spot on perfect and inventive.  I enjoyed every frame of this film.  Jesse eisenberg deserved more credit than received but I am sure he will astonish in another performance along the way.  Who knew J.T had chops like that?

    2.  Winter's Bone - Its brutal, humiliating at times, intoxicating, even gruesome in the meat of it, but in the end, in my opinion this film is a silent masterpiece tugging at you so slowly, yet forcefully that you don't want the scene to move to the next. Every frame of this film is genuine and not a second of it is wasted even when you may think that you are watching nothing. In a small film such as this, it all matters. From the wind and the barking dogs to the evil doings characters engage in. It all stands for its purpose and takes this amazing smaller film into deep territory. I love this film.

    3.  Inception - Another mind bender from Nolan.  The set pieces were large and beautiful, yet some undoubtedly familiar from the Tibet scene in Batman Begins.  All in all though,  this film was original and inventive and that has so much as waved bye bye in Hollywood these days.

    4.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - What a way to go out.  Or at least start to go out.  This franchise, with the exception of part 5, has only ever gotten better with every chapter.  The movies beauty is led by the amaziing books and the pacing is acurate with the way the book unfolds.  I thought this was the strongest Potter film to date.  Exciting, violent, and compelling all in the same scene.

    5.  Unstoppable - Go ahead nd laugh, but this was the film I have been waiting for Tony Scott to direct since Crimson Tide.  He's a master actioner, he just sometimes gets carried away.  This film shows how relaxed, yet incredibly brilliant he can be behind the camera on subtle action films were the death count is zero but the adrenaline is high.

    6.  Toy Story 3 - The best of all three films, this one takes us as faithful fans of the trilogy to new and exotic situations.  Ones that could not be created in this way back when the first two films came out.  Its much darker, yet just as funny and engaging as the other rest.  I thought this one was much larger than the other two without making them look bad.  I still love the first two.  These films are just fantastic.

    7.  The Town - Who didn't like this movie?  It really has all the elements for a great crime saga.  Was it a touch predictable?  Sure.  But was Heat a real mystery full of twists?  Not really.  The film is executed perfectly and the set up is astonishing the way things unfold.  Maximum tension throughout.

    8.  The Fighter - Great Boxing movie.  Who knew Mr. I Heart Hukabees, "Get off my set you C*#t" had it in him.  He really crafted a wonderful blend of straight Boston trash talk and Rocky style uplifting all in one.  The Dark Knight was fairly brilliant in it as well.

    9. The Other Guys - I didn't see Barney's Version so for me, this wa the funniest comedy of the year.  Everyone was hilarious in it.  Even Marky Marky who I thought was going to ruin it was really damn funny.  I love a good summer comedy with quotable lines like this.  Anchorman anyone?  Same writing/directing/acting team.  How could it go wrong?

    10. Let me in - Not quite as good as the Swedish version, but not trying to recreate it either.  Let the right one in was one of my favorite films as well in 09.  The story obviously speaks for itself.  People like the inventiveness of the storytelling.  It puzzles me why this film utterly bombed at the box office.  Especially right around Halloween.

Machete get's an honorable mention. - tell me this wasn't if anything entertaining.

My guilty pleasure of the year was Iron man 2 - I found myself drawn to Scarlet's ummm.  Suit.

My disappointment this year was The King's Speech. - Not sure what all the fuss was about.  I am a cinema lover so don't give me the old "its out of your league" crap.  It was just a real snoozer.

    Lastly,

      my least favorite;

    The A-Team - what a piece of sh*t.

    What looked horrible just from the trailer;

    Morning Glory - cliches galore

My favorite Oscar choices of all time

    Posted on 02/14/10 08:50 AM | Last edited on 02/14/10 08:50 AM

These are in my opinion, the best chices in Oscar history. Of course films and people were snubbed all throughout history, but here are the ones they got right. (In order of age)

    Best Picutre

All quite on the western front (1929) a major budget war movie with more to say than BOOM!

It happened one night (1934) Some consider it the first romantic comedy, but that would just be lowering its legend.

Casablanca (1943) Still possibly helms the greatest screenplay ever written and sold, but also had legendary improvisation happening. One of my all time favortie film.

On the waterfront (1954) Marlon Brando at he healthiest and most charismatic. What a great film.

Ben Hur (1959) The first major motion picture that one might call (dare I say) an "Epic blockbuster" of great magnitude.

The Sting (1973) With an amazing soundtrack by Scott Goplin this film feels fun yet the con vs. con is masterfully executed.

One flew over the Cuckoos nest (1975) The script and Jack. Need I say more. A masterpiece of contemporary character studies. One o my all time favorite films.

The Dear Hunter (1978) Amazing performances and a brilliant first half made this film. The rest is good too, but oh, that first half.

Platoon (1986) Talk full metal Jacket all you want, but this may be the best vietnam war movie ever made.

Dances with wolves (1990) Marked Kevin Costner as an unstoppable force at the time. Yes, the movie was trying very hard to win this honor, best it succeeded.

Braveheart (1995) Critics can talk historical inaccuracies all they want, but this movie was amazing nonetheless.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) This is the only film in the past decade to win this honor that I really truly loved.

    Rotten's Christmas Classics list

    Posted on 12/15/09 08:42 PM | Last edited on 12/15/09 08:45 PM

Here they are (in no particular order)

    Its a wonderful life

James Stewart is brilliant as George Baily, a frustrated and down on his luck businessman who is shown what life would have been like had he not existed. It is a deep and emotionally haunting piece of holiday film making. This one is amazing in depth and in style. It is really a must watch during the holidays and never seems to fade away in mind or in relevance. Frank Capra really was the best in the business during his time. If you haven't seen it you need to.

    Christmas Vacation

I don't care what the critics had to say about this film when it came out. So it wasn't really a sequel to anything fine. I'll admit that. The first two vacation films are sort of on their own as a franchise while the Vegas one is just a piece of trash everyone soon forgot.

This film stands alone as a wonderful and hilarious holiday classic. I say classic because to me it is. I was 12 years old when it came out and I saw it three times in the theater. When it came out on VHS I got it the following Christmas. One thing I can say about this film as opposed to many other holiday films. Even though it is considered a holiday film these days, it may be the only one that can be viewed any time of the year. Chevy Chase is funny but is far overshadowed by Randy Quaid's brilliantly portrayed character Eddie, the far away cousin-in-law. His manners are hilarious and he really steels the film when he comes into it about a third of the way through.

Love this film. True the family of the Grisswalds is not as funny here as they were in other entries, but like I said, this film had a different purpose, therefore it has a different fate. its fate is to make my generation laugh during the holidays for years to come.

    Miracle on 34th street

Creepy old Christmas "classic" starring Edmund Gwenn as a "Santa Claus wannabee" who seems to be certifiably insane and in love with a child much too young. This idea might have worked better had it been the Easter bunny.

    White Christmas

Good Christmas film, but simply put, too much singing and dancing for my taste. The film is essentially about true love, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. The plot really centers around a small Vermont Inn that has fallen into hard times and this ridiculous song and dance team try to pull off the comeback of the century. Pretty predictable, but really, what does one want from a 1950s Christmas film starring Bing Crosby? Good spirited Christmas film, but not one I could watch every Christmas.

    A Christmas Carol

This is my all time favorite Christmas film. It looks dated in the most genuine of ways, however, it feels refreshing and beautiful. This is simply because it reminds us of a better time in not only cinema, but a better time to see the beauty in all things. The atmospheric creepiness is top notch and I love Gene Lockhart as Cratchit. He seems to bring a joy to the film that other sequences squander from the shear dread of their situations and reminds us that the film is about much more than Christmas. Its about humanity.

Very good with the list.I feel Pixars...UP deserves to be in anyone's 100 list for the past 10 years. And you have the two towers in their but surely the other 2 deserve a spot also.

Wow, what a list. It's got a lot of classics, and a lot of stuff that I have never even seen (or heard of.)
