Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
I Saw it at midnight , Woot then proceeded to see it again the same day 13 hours later with my family in the same theater ironically .
The Potter films of course are adapted from J.K. Rowlings highly successful book series. I have read all the books multiple times . Admittedly I am a HUGE fan of these books. Let me start by saying this is one of the best in the series second only to Azkaban maybe .
Now HP:HBP is a adoption of a book so expect cuts. That’s to be expected in everything that is adapted to film be it a comic book , play , or work of literature . What makes a good adoption though is a entirely different subject for another time. Now the film dose omit and in some cases add things to the movie that where not in the book . the biggest addition being the attack on the Burror scene . Purist might cry foul but the scene works wonderfully its tense and expresses the danger that is in the war torn world.
As a Film HP:HBP works wonderfully. We see probably the most character growth since the 3rd film. Harry is in his 6th year now at Hogwarts and has been vindicated along with Dumbldore for there claim that the Dark Lord Voldemort has returned. The World we are introduced to now is indeed much more dark dangerous and not safe . We are shown this in the first 5 minutes of the movie by a Death Eater attack on a Bridge and then ravaging of Diagon Alley . We get our first glimpse of Fenir Greyback a Werewolf played by Dave Legeno who dose look rather beastly.
Harry is then picked up by Dumbldore and is taken to help recruit a new professor Horace Slughorn played by Jim Broadbent . Slughorn plays a major role in the plot of the film for eh has something Dumbldore needs. He charges Harry with retrieving it . Dumbldore ominously asks Harry to be “Collected” by him. We soon learn that Slughorn has a memory that might unravel the secrete to Lord Voldemorts immortality and power.
Meanwhile the movie also deals heavily with love. This is where we see some major growth the three main characters. This new aspect works to portray the overarching theme of the loss of innocence. This also leads to some extremely funny moments in the film and the eventual sobering sad scene since love is a to bladed sword. This movie like all of the films has terrific art direction and style. This also includes its use of color on screen to portray the tone of what’s going on . There will be times where it is basically black and white at times and others where all the colors of the rainbow appear in a dazzling display.
This movie walks a tightrope on one side we have the narrative and plot moving forward and on the other hand we have the character growth that happens . It also treads very well between the very light hearted fun that is the Harry Potter series and the very dark themes that is also in the Harry Potter series. This movie is a very heavy PG by my standards both for the mood and dark stuff that dose happen and also some slight possible sexual innuendos . if your kids read the books though or is over the age of say 9 he/she will be fine. There are some very touching scenes in this movie the best of which I belive to be the scene in Hagrid’s shack .
Harry Potter and the Half blood Prince balances everything expertly and there’s a lot going on in this movie . This is also one of the funniest Potter films I’ve ever seen and sets up the the Finale Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows
It gets a 9 out of 10 and is among the best in the series so far,
