I used to think the French were pretentious, artsy-fartsy, sissies who covered up narratives with walls of metaphors and allusions that boxed in their films. Everyone would tell me that "I don't get it" or "I'm just being a dumb American." At film school I would get looks when I would say how I didn't care much for Goddard. Maybe its for a purpose. Maybe I am just being naive and film-illiterate. I dove into a whirlwind of self-loathing and spite. I questioned my career path. If I couldn't appreciate French cinema, how could I make it in this business?
I have found my French film. And God damn is it good. Like "why-isn't-this-as-revered-as-other-movies" good. Go see it. Yes it has subtitles. Read them. You will become a better person for it. Why are you still reading the review of some random kid on Rotten Tomatoes?! GO WATCH THE MOVIE.
