    • One of my MANY pumpkin carvings. Check out the "art" section of my journal for more.
    • This is Santuary by David Miller, one of my top three favorite Whale Artists. Hopefully I'll be devoting quite a few posts to Whale Artists.
    • One of my favorite eastern dragon pictures. Ciruelo is definitely one of my favorite artists
    • This is a mural I just had done in the room right outside the theater. I love it. It has lots of elements from famous dragon paintings and fantasy movies.

Carving Pumpkins - Chapter 8: Western Dragons!

    Posted on 10/16/04 06:32 PM | Last edited on 10/16/04 06:22 PM

OK, Here's my Masterpiece from last year. It turns out I like Dragons. I read lots of Fantasy books with them, I collect statues (see my pics for my favorite one) and I collect paintings. One painter I love is Ciruelo Cabral. He does terrific dragons. I have a Giclee of his as well as a print or two including this one:

Now it just so happens that we can take this and turn it into a 4-bit gray scale image. With a bit of touch ups (and shrinkage for this journal) it looks like this:

Now once we have this, its possible to tape it to a pumpkin, do the "pin-cusion" thing on it, and a 4 hours of carving later, Wha-laa!!

In the day time, he doesn't look quite as impressive:

But at night, especially if you're into a whole East versus West Motif done up in dragons, I find it works out pretty well when you put them both on one big ole hurky pumpkin:

As Porky Pig would say, "A-bee-didi-bee-didi-bee....Thats all folks!!!"

That looks impressive. We don't really do pumpkin stuff over here, but I wish we did. :( How you've lit them looks really good, like they're glowing.

You have to scrape out the insides a lot until the side where the carving is on is very thin. This way you get a nice gray-scale effect. Truly, kids love them, and teens actually were pretty ga-ga over the dragons last year. You gotta work hard to impress teenagers.
