For everyone dismissing this as a poor attempt at copying No Strings Attached, let's examine the differences...Firstly, it's directed by Will Gluck. Easy A was immensely enjoyable and spoke much more to a youthful audience. If he was more comfortable with raunching it up, even Fired Up! would have been a commercially enjoyable movie (I still like it). No Strings Attached was directed by Ivan Reitman. Now, I'm not trying to take anything away from the great movies he has made. But he had a 9 year drought between "fresh" movies with Ghostbusters and Dave, then followed that with a 16 year drought between Dave and I Love You, Man. Since the 80s, he's been swinging and missing more than Nicholas Cage. Second, I love Natalie Portman, but she's too proper for a movie based on no-strings sex. And Ashton Kutcher makes me want to gouge my eyes out. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake are both charismatically sexy. The extent of No Strings Attached's supporting cast involved Cary Elwes, Kevin Kline, and that's it. Friends With Benefits gets the benefit of Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, Emma Stone, Andy Samberg (depending on your opinion of him), and Jenna Elfman (likewise). The screenwriter for No Strings Attached was a first timer, and proved to be generic at best. Harley Peyton won an Emmy for his writing on Twin Peaks in the 90s and also wrote the quirky, amusing (if overly long) Bandits back in 2001. As much as we movie-goers don't appreciate being saturated with the same thing over and over again. I think this one deserves a fair shake. There are enough factors to be hopeful that this will stand apart from No Strings Attached.
