So the trailer is finally here. James Cameron's new project, which up until now has been kept tightly under wraps, has finally been unveiled, via a new teaser trailer. Despite it's mysterious nature, Avatar has had a great deal of anticipation surrounding it. Considering that it is the first film to be directed by James Cameron in 12 years, the curiosity should come as no surprise. Throw in the fact that it is being heralded as the "future of film", and we have a reason for anyone to be interested. However, now that this first trailer has been released, the assertation that this is the movie that will change the industry is sure to turn more than a few heads. As a fan of Cameron's, I have been eager to find out more about this movie for quite some time. So when I pulled up the internet a few days ago and discovered that the first trailer was up, I was more than a bit excited. So I clicked on the nearest link and happily waited for the trailer to start. It only took a few seconds for my emotions to shoot the opposite way. Just one look at the blue cat-like alien, and it was over for me. I'm still in shock. What on earth was that?! This is the new technology that is supposed to revolutionize filmmaking? Please tell me this is a joke. The family-friendly cartoon look is not the only thing that bothered me about their appearance. The very thing that this movie is claiming is its main strength- the CGI- was absolutely horrible! To say that I am disappointed would be quite an understatement. Some people are claiming that they will wait for for more previews, for more details, or for the movie itself before giving up on it. I cannot say that I am one of those people. There is no getting over the appearance of the aliens (or the Na' vi, as they are called). They literally look like Pixar creations. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I am severely let down by what Avatar has turned out to be after all of its incredible claims. I will still stay in tune with the latest information on the movie, but no longer with the anticipation that I once had. The plot may turn out to be good or even great, but really, how seriously can you take a movie that centers around blue space elf-cats that could have been taken straight out of the newest Dreamworks movie? |
