A great accomplishment. It's the perfect choice for your 300th review. Congratulations. However, the last time I saw this, I was around 10 years old. Very good review! Good job! This is one of my all-time favorites, and my favorite of the decade next to Pan's Labyrinth, Amelie, and Almost Famous. I agree with all of your points, except for your comparison of this to Pulp Fiction and The Departed. I just don't see it. And Pulp Fiction will always be the best movie of all time in my book. I also loved City of God's intense cinematography and its important message and themes. Though very graphic and heartbreaking, EVERYONE must see this. 1 Replies | Report Abuse

Oh, this film was excellent...a 98 out of 100 for me. Not one of my 99's (that is to say, my top films, the ones I consider masterpieces), though...crime films rarely score as 99's. The Departed is the only one on my list. It still is high on my list of all-time favorites though, my second favorite crime film...hell, it might be better than The Departed...I'll have to think this through. 3 Replies | Report Abuse
I do think it is better than The Departed, due to its realistic and more mature themes. Also, I quite enjoy crime films. And if you consider The Godfather a crime film, it must be on the 99, on 1 for me :)
Of course The Godfather is a crime film...but I haven't seen it yet. I'm still dragging my heels about seeing a lot of classics, because I don't want to wind up packing my favorites list with the same films everyone else has.
Well, it depends on what you mean by crime film. It focuses on organized crime, but it doesn't depict many of those crimes safe for a few killings. Anyway, I highly recommend that one, being my personal favorite and the bets one I have ever seen

great review CACB I was surprised at how enjoyable and amazing this film was, I new it was a classic but was expecting something slightly more boring, I really liked it. But I'm not sure this is Kurosawa's masterpiece, I think Ran has a serious claim to that title, after all Kurosawa did spend 10 years painting each frame with water paints before actually starting filming!!!
