"A masterpiece of modern horror", boasts the tagline. There is no better description of The Shining--it is not a five-dollar horror movie that spits out cheap JUMPS OUT AN' SCARE YA thrills nor tasteless amounts of gore like so many other horrors. Instead, Kubrick builds a deeply unsettling atmosphere and revolves around what is really scary--someone who is supposed to love and protect you, a family member in this case, trying to kill you instead; not to mention troublesome and scarring memories taking their toll as well. The fine line between reality and hallucination and the paranormal is completely erased, leaving nothing but pure madness in its wake.
