Transformers: The Dark of the Moon was AMAZING. Maybe it is just that little kid inside me that loves to see giant robots on screen kicking arse, but I don't care. It has been ages since I have had this much fun at the movies! Yeah, The Expendables, Pirates 4 and The Green Hornet were all really fun, but despite these 'fun fests', Transformers 3 still comes out on top as the most enjoyable experience I have had at the movies in quite some time.
First of all, if you go to see a Transformers movie to see a superb plot unfold and AAA class acting then you are misguided and you won't like it. If you go see a Transformers movie with the hopes of seeing spectacular visuals and giant robots fucking shit up, then you will never be disappointed (but ah...maybe Transformers 2 can be an exception...). I always defended Michael Bay against masses of 'haters', but then he released Transformers 2, and I stopped backing him straight away. That is one reason why I was so sceptical to see this movie, another reason being the 36% approval rating by the critics. Then of course I saw the 90% approval rating by the audience. Now which side should I trust? The critics, those same critics that gave that terrible movie Indiana Jones 4 a certified fresh rating, or the audience - the people that are 'one of us', the people that judge a movie on what they expected, not on silly little minor things nobody actually cares about when going to see a movie like Transformers. So fortunately I decided to see Transformers 3, and damn was it fun.
The first hour or so is mainly back story, developing a plot that the rest of the movie can revolve around, there are short bursts of action, but are pretty infrequent. But you know what? I think I can forgive Bay for the lesser amount of action in the first third in the movie, especially considering the next two thirds are nonstop action, and I mean nonstop. As soon as the Deceptacon's start spilling onto the earth (and don't worry - that isn't a spoiler, this all happens before the half way mark so you find out what is going to happen pretty much as soon as the movie starts.) we are bombarded with endless sequences of over the top action, amazing slow motion sequences and some of the best CGI I have ever seen in my life. Sure, the CGI was impressive in Transformers 1 and 2, but Transformers 3 has THE BEST CGI, and that is no understatement - it is truly amazing. And if that weren't already enough, we get some of the best 3D sequences I have ever seen in my life as well! Now I am really not a fan of 3D at all, but even I have to admit that Transformers 3's 3D was the best around. You thought AVATAR had good 3D? Wait 'till you see what Transformers 3 has to offer.
This review is pretty short in comparison to my normal standards, but there is honestly not much more I can say. Sure, there isn't exactly an award winning plot or acting, but that isn't what we go to see when viewing a Transformers movie, we go to see 'awesomeness'. Transformers: The Dark of the Moon is to put it bluntly; a cool movie. Yeah True Grit was amazing, but I'm going to have to say that Transformers 3 is my favourite movie of the year so far, just because of the sheer amount of fun I had with it. Should you go see it? Hell yeah.
