No, this isn't a where's waldo. It's a blog that I figure might be a few paragraphs long and if y'all have lives and things on your plate that you need to take care of - please do those first.
I feel guilty that I have been away from Rotten Tomatoes now for several days (perhaps a week now) and I have 200 messages sitting in my inbox with various topics - ranging from why the new Rambo might be good to Read my Review of "Rocky 5000" -Spaceballs And while I am convinced that the right way to go for each of us is to first manage our own lives and deal with our own life logistics I still feel a connection to the RT community and to several of you. Your reviews your wisdom and your judgement have made me think and analyze and understand things better. I guess the bottom line is, I am not going to delete my profile and stop being a member of RT - I like this place a lot, it is much more accessible, much more elegant and BETTER in general than IMDB for example (and take it from me I am a web applications designer) Here we have people and forums and buzz and community. People are more accessible and we have profiles and comments and opinions and perspectives. I will be around when I can be around. Today is Princess Vespa's wedding day... I mean it is my girlfriends birthday and I am going out with her. I took the day off. Work has been difficult, I work as a web applications developer and I consult on the side. Right now I am editing code that dynamically genereates an SQL query (via Coldfusion MX7 - Adobe screwed it up with 8 and 9) and this query is a core business process of my company because it queries all the candidates in our database via an advanced search front end page and the Coldfusion code that dyncamically generates this MSSQL query is thousands of lines long.... I took a vacation to the Sand Dunes National Monument in south central Colorado (beautiful beautiful place that makes me feel like I am on an alien planet) I have been trying to connect with a couple of people at work and nurture some friendships I have been trying to keep everyone happy.... Hopefully everyone will get a +1 from me, I will try to say good job or comment on all of your reviews of "Rocky 5000" and believe me I take this business of writing and reading reviews and espousing contentions and making coherent arguments VERY VERY VERY seriously. When I get to your review I have no idea, but it will happen. And to promote reviews of the day I will make sure I comment on reviews that have come to me the soonest, but my backlog of stuff to catch up on will be handled! Thanks guys. I am very very sorry, life comes first and I am sure (if you are logical like Spock) you will agree! -SciFiMan |

I wanted to send out a heartfelt thank you to the members of rotten tomatoes community that have put up with my crap, my random f-bombs or s-bombs and my general opinion of sci-fi and what I think of it.
Everyone on here is passionate about their beliefs and through understanding different points of view - some of you have taught me or inspired me or helped me to understand more about the sci-fi genre than what I would have just gotten from watching the sci-fi films. Thanks guys, I am forever grateful, thumbs up and kudos to you!! |

The mood category does not have the appropriate mood to describe my feelings: livid
Avatar has lost, District 9 has lost an their names go onto a large list of names of epic sci-fi movies that never saw the light of day when it came time to hand out an academy award that did not have anything to do with special effects. It is paralyzing and I am dumbfounded and bewildered and I want closure on this subject and I want award and recognition where it is clearly due. E.T., Star Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Avatar, District 9, Star Trek and Metropolis: Sorry guys, the collaboration that hands out these awards has no respect for, no willingness to speak for or allow to be representative for the sci-fi genre and we do not look upon it or respect it or treat it with any respect and instead give our awards to films that are more about subjects that touch human nature at a foreseeable point in our historical evolution or a fantasy spectacle from a distant unknown past. The Academy has failed too many times to be innocent of the crimes of betrayl when it comes to giving credit where credit is due and I will nolonger watch the Academy Awards. |

Full agreement. The Sci-Fi genre needs representation. Not just because it's "Sci-Fi" but because there many brilliant Sci-Fi films. D-9 is a classic - it's a film that did a true revolution. It's the new Matrix. Then again, The Matrix didn't win yet we still talk about it. Look up any 5-star film in Allmovie and I don't think it won the Oscar.Long live the Prawns! 0 Replies | Report Abuse I wouldn't consider "The Matrix" to be a 4/4 film, for me it is more like 3.5/4 but I am very very upset.. Thanks for the comment! 0 Replies | Report Abuse I loved The Matrix, but that's not important. The good thing is that D-9 is going to be a cult film. Cult films generally end up standing the test of time (Blade Runner is also considered by some a Cult Film). 0 Replies | Report Abuse Full agreement. The Sci-Fi genre needs representation. But, i mean, come on, just the fact that two Sci-fi films got nominated for best picture should feel like a victory. And The Hurt Locker was just so dang good. I give fair balance to all genres, and i don't necessarily have any genre preference, that's just my view. Nice, Passionate blog, by the way. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I also try to give fair balance, although Sci-Fi seem to have more of an appeal to me. I think his anger also comes from the fact D-9 was more than a "Good Sci-Fi" film - it was just a good film. I haven't seen other nominees which are not called Up or Avatar, but did any of them take a risk as big as D-9's? 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yes, Hurt Locker was good - "damn good" is what I said in my review - but I liked District 9 so much more... I wish we could have a sci-fi movie that has won best picture. In the midst of anger and feelings of betrayl by the RT staff I posted the following on their Academy Awards Predictions page:
![]() SciFiMan writes: on Mar 04 2010 10:39 PM Highest Grossing Film of all time before adjusting for inflation ... CHECK (no.2 Titanic won 11 Academy awards and was directed by J.C. - we all know how that ended, no 3. won 11 Academy awards including best picture) Hurt Locker had a meager budget, lacked Atmosphere and Story, and while it was tense it could have had more... Maybe Bigelow should have stayed with J.C. and "milked that B****" until she could afford a few more airplanes for her VERY lacking sets. Maybe this movie needed a different element of atmospheric bling bling of some kind - maybe a fancy disco ball? ... District 9 had effects story and was right in so many ways acting, direction, screenplay, originality - this movie was snubbed in my opinion. I love you guys =) ![]() SciFiMan writes: on Mar 04 2010 10:43 PM oh, and on IMDB's top 250 - Avatar is 62, District 9 is 116 and Hurt Locker isn't even on it. LOL @ Hurt Locker fans. |

please, for god sake, rant all you want, but don't fault a film for having "a lack of budget". The academy may be biased against sci-fi, but The Hurt Locker is a great film. I'm sure the filmmakers weren't trying to offend anyone. You have very strong, polarizing views. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I agree, Hurt Locker was fantastic but there could have been improvements made if the budget was there... Sorry I feel this way... 0 Replies | Report Abuse please, for god sake, rant all you want, but don't fault a film for having "a lack of budget". The academy may be biased against sci-fi, but The Hurt Locker is a great film. I'm sure the filmmakers weren't trying to offend anyone. But Avatar has a decent chance of nabbing best picture. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I agree that the academy is too biased for it's own good, but The Hurt locker was a great example of what you could do with an almost non-existent budget, and District 9 also is up against movies like Precious. I couldn't care less what some up their own arse celebrity panel thinks about a film. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I wouldn't get to annoyed, its just an award show...you know whats good and so do the public. At this point Hurt Locker is the odds-on favorite. That's just how it is.I lost all respect for the Academy when they threw two measly bones to The Dark Knight last year. I'll hope that my favorites do well, but I certainly won't let it bother me if they lose. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Cory I am feeling your pain right now - I have lost all respect for the Academy for not having ever selected a sci-fi after so many sci-fi masterpiece films have been made..... One day maybe they will see the light and it is when that happens that I might decide to start watching the academy awards again! thanks for your comment! 0 Replies | Report Abuse Remember that this isn't who RT thinks SHOULD win the Oscars, it's who RT thinks WILL win the Oscars. The hype from Avatar ruined D9s chances I think and the campaigning from the cast and crew of Hurt Locker pretty much bought them the academy award anyway. Tell me there isn't anything immoral or unethical about that.... 0 Replies | Report Abuse Thanks you citing my blog SciFiMan. I'd be interested in what others think as well.My take on the AVATAR/HURT LOCKER subject:Imagine if Cameron had held off releasing AVATAR in cinemas, and instead embarked for the next 18 months on a global film festival tour to scoop up critical momentum instead. What would 18 months of luncheons, meet-and-greets, butt-kissing, begging, and groveling do for AVATAR for the 2011 Oscars?I actually think its chances at the Academy would've fared far better than it did. That's not to say that I believe it deserves more awards, but only to suggest that had AVATAR approached the 2010 Oscars the same way THE HURT LOCKER did, I think things would've happened differently for it.(I really don't think Cameron cares; he's too busy wiping his ass with $100 bills. If he lived for 500 more years, he still wouldn't run out of $100 to wipe his ass with). 0 Replies | Report Abuse well, looks like u were totally wrong 1 Replies | Report Abuse I like to say that imperfection is inherent to the human condition - and not only that - but the politics used to make Hurt Locker the winner might have not been ethically or morally aligned with the rest of us - I will do more research on this and get back to you - but I read an interesting blog: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/user/378834/blogs/view.php?id=658128Also, I still think RT is wrong and the Academy - do what they will - I think they might have more popular support if they voted for films that were the actual superior films - financially or philosophically or whatever - District 9 was clearly Superior to Hurt Locker. Why do people rate my reviews and give me a "-1" and then fail to leave an explanation for their rating????!?!?!?!?
That is horrible. |

I saw many films this year that I thought were fantastic. This has been a GREAT year for movies!
Up in the Air was great - watching George Clooney's character stand in front of the flight scheduler at whichever airport made me think about the vast sea of unknown in terms of what can happen by virtue of decisions we make - whether it is flying to somewhere or sleeping with a woman that could potentially be married. Inglorious Basterds was another great film - it was about dedicating your life to killing your enemy and scaring them and marking them so that they can be identified. This was very well done and the message was eloquent and clear. Star Trek and Avatar and District 9 were also ALL very good films as they all had different shades of exploration and discovery and finding universal truth in the great unknown. I saw many films this year -- and I am astounded because Sci-Fi has come so far and done so much in terms of inspiring people, teaching us about human nature, and helping us know about what we can do to better ourselves. I really have had the ride of my life - having been a veteran of sitting in the living room of my home in the mid '80s watching Empire Strikes Back or Back to the Future or Aliens or Terminator over and over and over... Going with my college buddies to see Matrix at the AMC near our school was an awesome experience because I grew close with them and I enjoyed our general consensus that the movie rocked, that sci-fi rocked and that we would be ditching our CS classes to come see it again tomorrow..... And this year, Avatar was outstanding. If there was ever a film that deserved best picture, it is probably this film. It is evident that lots of time and thought and art and heart went into this film and with seeing and knowing what James Cameron is capable of - this almost seems like a hoax. People clapped in all of my screenings, I failed to find anyone that I know that would say anything bad about it. My review of this film I think speaks for itself and the box office numbers send a loud and clear message. District 9 was also outstanding. Sharlto Copley stood out and blew audiences away with his performance. Blomkamp did a great job and created a story and effects that I won't forget. Seeing Wikus try to stop the whole transformation process by cutting off his arm was awesome - his face of resolve is unforgettable; seeing the alien starship hovering above Johannusburg while thinking that it has been to many different galaxies was jaw dropping; seeing Wikus move from Antagonist to Protagonist was an inspiration; seeing the bloody mess that the guns created was pretty moving; MEETING aliens with feeling and authenticity to them was a RELIEF I can go on forever on district 9. Star Trek was seamless. It moved from scene to scene effortlessly, and everything came together and seemed to be in perfect harmony. The genesis of Star Trek is worthy of consideration for awards because of the grand scope it has in terms of human nature and adversity scenarios. The characters are believable and the antagonist (Nero) does a damn good job. I must admit, I don't know what is going to win best picture, but I bet, I wish, I hope and I pray that it will be one of the three above films. At the very least Sharlto better win Best Actor. I am thinking District 9 for Best Pic, but Avatar might take it all. (I mean, we are talking about James Cameron here...) I hope other people feel like I do on all this sci-fi stuff. I hope that sci-fi wins the awards that it should have won a long time ago... |

I loved District 9 and thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek. I would be fine with either one winning best picture. I would agree that Sharlto Copley should be nominated for Best Actor. The one issue I have is Avatar. You said, "I failed to find anyone that I know that would say anything bad about it." Now you have. Read my review. I might come across as a little harsh, but I am praying that it doesn't win best picture. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yes, after having seen these films several times I am definitely leaning in the direction of District 9 - I really want to see it win! 0 Replies | Report Abuse I loved District 9 and thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek.
