Conversation: How do you compare a Sci-Fi Classic to any classic from any other genre in terms of AWARD merit??!?

Hopefully I get a lot of replies on this.  Eventually.  I just thought I would post this in my blogs so that a conversation could be had regarding how merit is given to films and what differentiates the best of the best - from the eyes of audience - between all the different genres of film.

One idea that I have is to think of all factors that apply to all movies.  For example some reasons might include: how much the movie made at the box office, how much the film production costed, how well the production was recieved by major critcics...

I think it is hard to compare performances between actors - for example how would you compare Sharlto Copley from District 9 to Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart?

It is hard to compare great musical scores.

As long as everyone dots their i's and crosses their t's and makes a movie by the book and does a good job and developes something that is wildly popular and successful and well done - how are movies then sorted and ranked?

And what of religious or political factors?  What if a movie has a message that might offend someone even though it is not intended to and critics fail to be impartial and objective?

Where the hell have I been?

It has been over a year since I have posted anything of consequence on my rotten tomatoes profile. This was once a place that I would visit daily and post my reviews and opinions about everything science fiction related.

I wanted to post something going into the summer of this year so that you are all aware of the gravity of what is going on in the world of sci-fi. I have a lot to say - so sit back, relax, and grab a cupcake and a margarita.

In June a movie called Prometheus will hit the theaters and possibly create the greatest sci-fi movie uproar we have seen in years. The trailer is definitely awesome looking and the viral campaign that they have started off (that is not actually in the movie but is material that is related to what is in the movie) has captured some attention.

This will be directed by none other than Sir Ridley Scott - the guy who also just happens to have Alien and Blade Runner on his resume. After looking through all the information I could find in my searches on this movie I have discovered that it is in the same universe as Alien as well as Blade Runner but will not really be about the content that is in either of those two movies.

I cannot even begin to explain to you guys how excited I am to see Ridley back in the director’s chair doing science fiction. This promises to be an awesome movie.

I wanted to discuss Star Trek also - it appears that the next installment of the highly successful "Star Trek" from 2009 is underway. I know nothing about it but in the tradition of almost all Star Trek movies I expect nothing less than sheer brilliance when I sit down to watch it. I had a bit of a revelation the other day reading over the comments on IMDB regarding this film. My revelation is this: Why do we always find ourselves on the bridge of a starship in these movies? Why is it that they have created this future for humanity in which "money doesn't exist in the 24th century, the acquisition of wealth is no longer a driving force for humanity, we work to better ourselves" .... They have created this and yet all their movies are about exploration of the universe. They never explore what their society could be like. They never indulge the viewers and show us what the future is like for the average joe citizen of the federation. I think that the Star Trek Universe could broaden its horizons a little bit and discuss social and political and economic themes and explore the people/aliens that make up the federation. Seeing people jump on teleporters every day to go do what they do to "better themselves" could be an intriguing tale; seeing what people do for fun I am sure could go beyond what our imaginations are capable of perceiving in the split second you are reading this; seeing how they have changed our solar system to maybe make it look more like it would in Kim Stanley Robinsons Red Mars/Green Mars/Blue Mars would be fascinating...

I have one wild imagination but hopefully you guys can acknowledge that there is a lot of content that can be discussed and a lot of exploration that can be done - even if only as an exercise for us - in a future world where we have advanced so much that we have solved social crises and become explorers of the universe. Gene Roddenberry would be rolling over in his grave if he heard me say this - but shouldn't Star Trek be more of a Trek in terms of how humanity has evolved and how socio-political situations have changed in addition to exploring the universe and dealing with random adversity that crops up during this exploration process? Seems like there is more to explore than just space....

Finally I wanted to make sure I said something about a guy we know and love named Neill Blomkamp. District 9 was and still is my favorite science fiction film to this day. It was shocking and outstanding and ... this was his FIRST film. He has been working on a movie called "Elysium" for which no details have really been released other than who will be in it and that it is a science fiction film of some sort. We will find out a lot I am sure in the time leading up to its 2013 release. I read somewhere that this movie will be very good and that Neill has some talent...

I guess the bottom line is, if the glorious ACADEMY has developed any sensibility to nominate and choose a film that is sci-fi for best picture and other meaningful awards then I think 2012 and 2013 are both good years for sci-fi. We have a shot. Hopefully we don't get a repeat of the Hurt Locker vs District 9 crap again - I am still mystified by thier decision for the winner for 2009 - but I have leared I guess and read that the politics of the director of Hurt Locker as well as the hold off on the release date while campaigning her movie so that it came out a year later than it should have played a huge role in swaying the academy’s opinion.

IF you ask me, this should not be possible and these people should be unbiased.... I feel like this is on the same level as asking for there to be no lobbyists allowed to talk to or manipulate the people who run our country.

    WTF.

    Where is SciFiMan now?!

    Posted on 06/10/10 01:54 PM | Last edited on 06/11/10 09:38 PM

No, this isn't a where's waldo. It's a blog that I figure might be a few paragraphs long and if y'all have lives and things on your plate that you need to take care of - please do those first.

I feel guilty that I have been away from Rotten Tomatoes now for several days (perhaps a week now) and I have 200 messages sitting in my inbox with various topics - ranging from why the new Rambo might be good to Read my Review of "Rocky 5000" -Spaceballs

And while I am convinced that the right way to go for each of us is to first manage our own lives and deal with our own life logistics I still feel a connection to the RT community and to several of you. Your reviews your wisdom and your judgement have made me think and analyze and understand things better.

I guess the bottom line is, I am not going to delete my profile and stop being a member of RT - I like this place a lot, it is much more accessible, much more elegant and BETTER in general than IMDB for example (and take it from me I am a web applications designer) Here we have people and forums and buzz and community. People are more accessible and we have profiles and comments and opinions and perspectives.

I will be around when I can be around. Today is Princess Vespa's wedding day... I mean it is my girlfriends birthday and I am going out with her. I took the day off. Work has been difficult, I work as a web applications developer and I consult on the side. Right now I am editing code that dynamically genereates an SQL query (via Coldfusion MX7 - Adobe screwed it up with 8 and 9) and this query is a core business process of my company because it queries all the candidates in our database via an advanced search front end page and the Coldfusion code that dyncamically generates this MSSQL query is thousands of lines long....

I took a vacation to the Sand Dunes National Monument in south central Colorado (beautiful beautiful place that makes me feel like I am on an alien planet)

I have been trying to connect with a couple of people at work and nurture some friendships

I have been trying to keep everyone happy....

Hopefully everyone will get a +1 from me, I will try to say good job or comment on all of your reviews of "Rocky 5000" and believe me I take this business of writing and reading reviews and espousing contentions and making coherent arguments VERY VERY VERY seriously. When I get to your review I have no idea, but it will happen. And to promote reviews of the day I will make sure I comment on reviews that have come to me the soonest, but my backlog of stuff to catch up on will be handled!

Thanks guys. I am very very sorry, life comes first and I am sure (if you are logical like Spock) you will agree!

    Rating System: Thinking about the

    Posted on 04/15/10 11:40 PM | Last edited on 04/16/10 05:21 PM

So I dish out ratings and here is the 41.21342 second version of what it all means. I tried to go easy on the f-bombs.

0%. You are dumbass bunch of film creator/contributor crackhead fucknuts! Why did you make this crap?!?! Someone might bid for it on ebay (for 2 cents) and you might win a Razzie! I wish I had my time back! GRRRRRRRR

10%-50%: I typically do not hand out these ratings as they mean that the film is subpar - a rotten tomato is a rotten tomato. I do however use these scores to give films some credit where I think it is due - but I reserve this for sci-fi films and films that for whatever reason still manage to touch my heart in some way.

60%: Good but definitely lacking in some way shape or form that is notable or that there is a large consensus on.

    70%: Good.

80%: Damn Good. The director and cast and crew did a great job and there were only small issues that I might have had.

90%: Damn Good. Might be a 100 for some, might be a 80% for others, I use this to differentiate 90% movies from films that are:

100%: This movie was awesome, it was perfect in every way! It is likely that there exists a religious cult (of crackhead fucknuts) that were inspired by this movie! .....kidding..... don't take this blog too seriously!

Hell yeah for sci-fi! I see you have an Arthur C. Clarke book there. You have to read the 2001 novel. The only way to describe it is pure beauty. I also heard Neuromancer by William Gibson gave birth to cyberpunk (Matrix, Terminator, RoboCop, and basically Sci-Fi with violence). Awesome stuff thurr.

I wanted to send out a heartfelt thank you to the members of rotten tomatoes community that have put up with my crap, my random f-bombs or s-bombs and my general opinion of sci-fi and what I think of it.

Everyone on here is passionate about their beliefs and through understanding different points of view - some of you have taught me or inspired me or helped me to understand more about the sci-fi genre than what I would have just gotten from watching the sci-fi films.

Thanks guys, I am forever grateful, thumbs up and kudos to you!!

Why I will never watch the Academy Awards EVER AGAIN

    Posted on 03/07/10 10:00 PM | Last edited on 03/07/10 10:00 PM

The mood category does not have the appropriate mood to describe my feelings: livid

Avatar has lost, District 9 has lost an their names go onto a large list of names of epic sci-fi movies that never saw the light of day when it came time to hand out an academy award that did not have anything to do with special effects.

It is paralyzing and I am dumbfounded and bewildered and I want closure on this subject and I want award and recognition where it is clearly due.

E.T., Star Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Avatar, District 9, Star Trek and Metropolis: Sorry guys, the collaboration that hands out these awards has no respect for, no willingness to speak for or allow to be representative for the sci-fi genre and we do not look upon it or respect it or treat it with any respect and instead give our awards to films that are more about subjects that touch human nature at a foreseeable point in our historical evolution or a fantasy spectacle from a distant unknown past.

The Academy has failed too many times to be innocent of the crimes of betrayl when it comes to giving credit where credit is due and I will nolonger watch the Academy Awards.

Full agreement. The Sci-Fi genre needs representation. Not just because it's "Sci-Fi" but because there many brilliant Sci-Fi films. D-9 is a classic - it's a film that did a true revolution. It's the new Matrix. Then again, The Matrix didn't win yet we still talk about it. Look up any 5-star film in Allmovie and I don't think it won the Oscar.Long live the Prawns!

I loved The Matrix, but that's not important. The good thing is that D-9 is going to be a cult film. Cult films generally end up standing the test of time (Blade Runner is also considered by some a Cult Film).

I loved The Matrix, but that's not important. The good thing is that D-9 is going to be a cult film. Cult films generally end up standing the test of time (Blade Runner is also considered by some a Cult Film).

I can see that, as the SciFiMan, you would like to see a sci-fi film win. But, i mean, come on, just the fact that two Sci-fi films got nominated for best picture should feel like a victory. And The Hurt Locker was just so dang good. I give fair balance to all genres, and i don't necessarily have any genre preference, that's just my view. Nice, Passionate blog, by the way.

I also try to give fair balance, although Sci-Fi seem to have more of an appeal to me. I think his anger also comes from the fact D-9 was more than a "Good Sci-Fi" film - it was just a good film. I haven't seen other nominees which are not called Up or Avatar, but did any of them take a risk as big as D-9's?

Yes, Hurt Locker was good - "damn good" is what I said in my review - but I liked District 9 so much more... I wish we could have a sci-fi movie that has won best picture. Because of this loss I feel like James Cameron should abandon future Avatar installments and work on Battle Angel.

I think most sci-fi films are beyond awards. We don't need them, and one day a sci-fi film will win best picture. I have a feeling it will be a Cameron film to. Maybe Avatar 2 or Battle Angel. Maybe by then most of the old farts will have died and replaced with younger, more openminded people.

This kind of genre snobbery is what makes phrases like "Oscar bait" even possible, and it's pretty pathetic. I like the way cracked.com describes the Academy Awards: "The most expensive televised masturbation each year outside of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest and The Apprentice."For some other specific examples of Oscar stupidity, how about Chicago over The Two Towers (2002), Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan (1998), or my personal favorite, Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. And don't even get me started on The Dark Knight NOT EVEN GETTING A NOMINATION for Best Picture.

2001: A Space Odyssey wasn't even moninated for Best Picture. 'Nuff said, The Academy Awards is a publicity contest and a farce. The Academy only gave The Hurt Locker Best Picture and Best Director because they thought they would recieve publicity for giving the first female director the Best Director. Then again I didn't care for Avatar either but I did enjoy District 9.

In the midst of anger and feelings of betrayl by the RT staff I posted the following on their Academy Awards Predictions page:

Highest Grossing Film of all time before adjusting for inflation ... CHECK (no.2 Titanic won 11 Academy awards and was directed by J.C. - we all know how that ended, no 3. won 11 Academy awards including best picture)

Hurt Locker had a meager budget, lacked Atmosphere and Story, and while it was tense it could have had more... Maybe Bigelow should have stayed with J.C. and "milked that B****" until she could afford a few more airplanes for her VERY lacking sets. Maybe this movie needed a different element of atmospheric bling bling of some kind - maybe a fancy disco ball? ...

District 9 had effects story and was right in so many ways acting, direction, screenplay, originality - this movie was snubbed in my opinion.

    I love you guys =)

oh, and on IMDB's top 250 - Avatar is 62, District 9 is 116 and Hurt Locker isn't even on it. LOL @ Hurt Locker fans.

please, for god sake, rant all you want, but don't fault a film for having "a lack of budget". The academy may be biased against sci-fi, but The Hurt Locker is a great film. I'm sure the filmmakers weren't trying to offend anyone. You have very strong, polarizing views.

I agree that the academy is too biased for it's own good, but The Hurt locker was a great example of what you could do with an almost non-existent budget, and District 9 also is up against movies like Precious. But Avatar has a decent chance of nabbing best picture.

I like to say that imperfection is inherent to the human condition - and not only that - but the politics used to make Hurt Locker the winner might have not been ethically or morally aligned with the rest of us - I will do more research on this and get back to you - but I read an interesting blog: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/user/378834/blogs/view.php?id=658128Also, I still think RT is wrong and the Academy - do what they will - I think they might have more popular support if they voted for films that were the actual superior films - financially or philosophically or whatever - District 9 was clearly Superior to Hurt Locker. The hype from Avatar ruined D9s chances I think and the campaigning from the cast and crew of Hurt Locker pretty much bought them the academy award anyway. Tell me there isn't anything immoral or unethical about that....

Thanks you citing my blog SciFiMan. I'd be interested in what others think as well.My take on the AVATAR/HURT LOCKER subject:Imagine if Cameron had held off releasing AVATAR in cinemas, and instead embarked for the next 18 months on a global film festival tour to scoop up critical momentum instead. What would 18 months of luncheons, meet-and-greets, butt-kissing, begging, and groveling do for AVATAR for the 2011 Oscars?I actually think its chances at the Academy would've fared far better than it did. That's not to say that I believe it deserves more awards, but only to suggest that had AVATAR approached the 2010 Oscars the same way THE HURT LOCKER did, I think things would've happened differently for it.(I really don't think Cameron cares; he's too busy wiping his ass with $100 bills. If he lived for 500 more years, he still wouldn't run out of $100 to wipe his ass with).

    Academy Awards for 2009 Films

    Posted on 01/03/10 11:56 PM | Last edited on 01/04/10 09:53 PM

I saw many films this year that I thought were fantastic. This has been a GREAT year for movies!

Up in the Air was great - watching George Clooney's character stand in front of the flight scheduler at whichever airport made me think about the vast sea of unknown in terms of what can happen by virtue of decisions we make - whether it is flying to somewhere or sleeping with a woman that could potentially be married. Inglorious Basterds was another great film - it was about dedicating your life to killing your enemy and scaring them and marking them so that they can be identified. This was very well done and the message was eloquent and clear. Star Trek and Avatar and District 9 were also ALL very good films as they all had different shades of exploration and discovery and finding universal truth in the great unknown.

I saw many films this year -- and I am astounded because Sci-Fi has come so far and done so much in terms of inspiring people, teaching us about human nature, and helping us know about what we can do to better ourselves. I really have had the ride of my life - having been a veteran of sitting in the living room of my home in the mid '80s watching Empire Strikes Back or Back to the Future or Aliens or Terminator over and over and over... Going with my college buddies to see Matrix at the AMC near our school was an awesome experience because I grew close with them and I enjoyed our general consensus that the movie rocked, that sci-fi rocked and that we would be ditching our CS classes to come see it again tomorrow.....

And this year, Avatar was outstanding. If there was ever a film that deserved best picture, it is probably this film. It is evident that lots of time and thought and art and heart went into this film and with seeing and knowing what James Cameron is capable of - this almost seems like a hoax. People clapped in all of my screenings, I failed to find anyone that I know that would say anything bad about it. My review of this film I think speaks for itself and the box office numbers send a loud and clear message.

District 9 was also outstanding. Sharlto Copley stood out and blew audiences away with his performance. Blomkamp did a great job and created a story and effects that I won't forget. Seeing Wikus try to stop the whole transformation process by cutting off his arm was awesome - his face of resolve is unforgettable; seeing the alien starship hovering above Johannusburg while thinking that it has been to many different galaxies was jaw dropping; seeing Wikus move from Antagonist to Protagonist was an inspiration; seeing the bloody mess that the guns created was pretty moving; MEETING aliens with feeling and authenticity to them was a RELIEF

I can go on forever on district 9.

Star Trek was seamless. It moved from scene to scene effortlessly, and everything came together and seemed to be in perfect harmony. The genesis of Star Trek is worthy of consideration for awards because of the grand scope it has in terms of human nature and adversity scenarios. The characters are believable and the antagonist (Nero) does a damn good job.

I must admit, I don't know what is going to win best picture, but I bet, I wish, I hope and I pray that it will be one of the three above films.

At the very least Sharlto better win Best Actor. I am thinking District 9 for Best Pic, but Avatar might take it all. (I mean, we are talking about James Cameron here...) I hope other people feel like I do on all this sci-fi stuff. I hope that sci-fi wins the awards that it should have won a long time ago...

I loved District 9 and thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek. I would be fine with either one winning best picture. I would agree that Sharlto Copley should be nominated for Best Actor. The one issue I have is Avatar. You said, "I failed to find anyone that I know that would say anything bad about it." Now you have. Read my review. I might come across as a little harsh, but I am praying that it doesn't win best picture.
