The Rwandan genocide of the mid 90s is told through the sharp and brilliant lens of Michael Caton Jones - probably one of the world's most underated directors. John Hurt as the Catholic priest in the UN protected area gives a magnificent performance as does Hugh Dancy as the school teacher going through the emotional turmoil of leaving his "people" behind to die in the compound or to stay and be butchered himself. This is a raw unflinching drama using real Rwandans who survived the genocide through miraculous acts such as hiding under their dead relatives to avoid extremists. The graphic violence and injustice of it all resonates deeply and at the end of this movie one only has thoughts for those who perished in the most awful way - being hacked to death by machete and left bleeding to death by the side of the road. 800,000 Rwandans died in the mid 1990s because of this genocide. If ever you needed grounding and brought to appreciation of life then this film certainly achieves. Be grateful for what you have no matter how small. |
