The Roommate is a Single White Female rip-off about a college freshman named Sara (Minka Kelly). She is making a smooth adjustment to college life, especially when it comes to flirting and partying. She is already dating a popular upperclassman (Cam Gigandet) and catches the attention the attention of a well-connected professor (Billy Zane) she wants as a mentor.
However, the monkey wrench is tossed into the cogs by her extremely creepy roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester). Rebecca proceeds to monopolize Sara's time and starts a psychotic reign of terror where she ruins all of the poor girl's relationships. She tells a suitor to never call Sara again, killing her cat Cuddles, and ripping a ring right out of the belly of her best friend, Tracy (Alyson Michalka).
As I've already mentioned beforehand, The Roommate is an undergrad rip-off of Single White Female. While the writer Sonny Mallhi has tried to cover it, the plagiarism is still visible. Changing the setting and a few minor details doesn't make the story anymore original.
Another problem this movie is plagued with is the horrible acting. Kelly (probably best known for Friday Night Lights) is incredibly boring and doesn't make me care at all for her college girl stereotype. Meester (from Gossip Girl) is probably the worst performance in the movie. From the very beginning, I knew there was something off about her, and because of this, nothing she does is that shocking because we are expecting it the entire time.
The Roommate is nothing special. It is a terrible rip-off of a thriller that wasn't that good in the first place. If you want to see a movie about a crazy roommate, go pick up Single White Female and skip this trash.
