This movie makes me feel like a little child every time I watch it. All my childhood fears flood my system and I suddenly find myself not wanting to watch TV and go nowhere near my closet. Though the effects are far from amazing (they were in their time), this horror flick does something that most horror flicks fail to do: genuinely frighten those that are watching. It doesn't use shock factor. It uses classic Hollywood techniques of the lack of knowledge to scare us. We don't know what we're afraid of, we just know we need to stay as far away from it as possible.
Absolutely timeless and still terrifying, "Poltergeist" still makes me scared of clowns and static on TVs.
