Congo (1995)
Agrees With....
Posted on 6/26/09 at 11:45 AM I plan to write more reviews slowly, but this one gets the first because to most outsiders, it will appear the most ridiculous.
Congo as a sci-fi movie is not very good. The premise is preposterous, the plot is kind of hokey and the special effects are bad. Now that we have that out of the way, lets get to why this is a 9/10 movie: Tim Curry, Ernie Hudson, Delroy Lindo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and more. The cast of actors have impeccable line delivery. You can tell all of them are having a lot of fun with their absurd roles. The cadence of Lindo's speech and his confrontation with Tim Curry's character is one for the ages. Tim Curry's accent is terrible and over the top, but it works so well for a movie to be taken lightly. Even Pantiliano's bit role is a fantastic comedic experience. Hudson's take on Monroe is a "playful badass". Hudson should have more roles like this. It is great to see his lighter side. His line delivery is very crisp and cheeky. While not the main character, he becomes the glue that kind of holds this rabble together. This movie should be seen as a sci-fi comedy. If you are unable to appreciate the great comedic delivery of talented character actors, this movie will have a very low rating in your mind. However, if you can see this movie for what the actors want it to be and not what the producers want it to be, then it is one of the most enjoyable movie experiences you can have. |
