Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1920)
Agrees With....
Posted on 10/9/09 at 10:57 PM This movie is very interesting, especially considering when it was made. I had the misfortune (or good fortune, if you love silent films :P) to see the silent 104 minute cut. I much rather would have seen the narrated 87 min version, considering the text itself is in Swedish, so the text with subtitles under it take up your whole TV screen. Yuck. Also, you spend a good 20 min total just reading the black screen with text. Yes, I know, 1920 and all, but these days I really don't want to do that.
The movie itself is at times funny, at times shocking, and also sometimes downright scary when the Inquisition is discussed. I mean, really? 8 million people died during the Inquisition? That's just nuts. I also felt really bad for the actress portraying the old, poor woman accused of witchcraft that we see tortured. Pretty gritty stuff for 1920!! This movie is worth a watch for horror buffs or history/sociology nerds. I probably would not want to watch it again though, because of its length. Unless somehow I manage to see the narrated version. |
