Stendhal syndrome, Stendhal's syndrome, hyperkulturemia, or Florence syndrome is a psychosomatic illness that causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations when an individual is exposed to art, usually when the art is particularly beautiful or a large amount of art is in a single place. The term can also be used to describe a similar reaction to a surfeit of choice in other circumstances, e.g. when confronted with immense beauty in the natural world.
Best Rape/Revenge movie I've ever seen and only a director like Argento, could make me like a film like this. The Stendhal Syndrome is bizarre, twisted, and sick, yet still one favorite movies of all-time. I also think this movie is very symbolic and probably Dario Argento most thought provoking movie. Then again, most people will probably find this movie more offensive than entertaining.
The Stendhal Syndrome stars Asia Argento who never looked sexier than in this movie. Anna (Asia) suffers from the stendhal syndrome and a rapist named Alfredo (Thomas Krestchmann) uses her condition against her. But the rapist never kills Anna unlike his other victims, he becomes obsessed with her. Anna herself becomes obsessed with madness, that has been brought through being raped and beaten. Anna seeks revenge and tries hard not become the monster, she fears is growing inside of her.
Now this movie will not be for everyone and I realise that. I only recommend it to fans of old grindhouse rape/revenge movies or hardcore fans of Dario Argento. I would also like to mention that Ennio Morricone score here is very good, very haunting after you've seen this several times. This is one crazy as hell movie and one of my favorites from Dario Argento.
