Documentaries are won and lost on the characters they expose and the stories that have to spontaniously develop. This wins big on both, a range of brilliantly quirky characters and an epic rivalry explored between two people at either end of dignity.

Williams gives (another) masterclass of minimal acting - she is real and affecting. The story is slight and slow but still 80 mins of gold.

More ridiculous nonsense from the Cage conveyor-belt. This is a stinker, a ludicrous plot makes fools of some high calibre actors who should know better.

There are some moments of magic where Water for Elephants plays like a live action Dumbo, the circus train rolling from town to town and the Big Top pitched where it stops. But it's what's happening in the background, rather than the love triangle in the foreground that holds any interest.

'Against the current' deals with themes of loss and mortality with mixed results. A fine story and wonderful cinematography is littered with clumsy dialogue and weak performances. The swimming pace of the movie allows ample time for character development but we know about as much about them at the end as we did at the start. A shame because there is a much better film here somewhere.

It takes a long time to really get going but is always engrossing. Some amazing speacial effects make up for any other minor gripes.

    Bombay Beach (2011)
    Genre:

Bombay Beach, the once prosperous town from the title is a shambles. And initially it is this, the voyeuristic appeal of how people could live here that is the draw. But with the use of light and tone the makers have managed to find beauty in every nook. Beauty is also found in the unquestionably flawed characters, whilst their faults are never glossed over, they are portrayed fairly and all are endearing in their own way. Such is the natural tone, there is never a sense of anyone playing up to the camera, that is until the risky choreographed dance scenes. How this works and is not a detatching disaster is perhaps the films biggest miracle as somehow it works... even enhances. Bombay Beach is a haunting success in almost every way.

Mental illness/apocalypse visions aside, this is an achingly sentimental film as Michael Shannon does whatever it takes to take care of his family. Directed with a light touch, it would have been easy to focus and exaggerate on Shannon's decline. Instead simple scenes of family life make the outbursts of drama all the more fierce and unsettling. Shannon is hugely impressive, the more he tries to suppress his turmoil the more it shows, he plays the role with a great subtlety.

Liam Neeson is second only to Nic Cage when it comes to over-the-top madness. Roles like Taken and Unknown have become his niche of late and though he takes himself too seriously he usually delivers when it comes to the action. With 'The Grey' we get the OTT acting but none of the action and the balance is gone. In place of action/drama is a relentlessly bleak story that goes nowhere, simply a succession of nameless men being picked off by wolves.

It is tough to respect a Neeson dig when you wrote Nic Cage was "just about enough...to keep it watchable" in reference to Bangkok Dangerous. Ultimately it was tough to find a review other than this one I disagreed with. Well in. Join my army.

This is a huge dip in form for Eastwood. Three very individual stories set in San Francisco, London and Paris only come together in the last 10 minutes giving them no time to gel. Damon as a reluctant psychic is solid without being spectacular but is out of place amidst this amateurish cast.
