A movie with a not so impressive story, but MORE then makes up with it with its terrific effects, and VERY creative setting.
It's about a boy who can control the power of wind, water, fire, and....oh wait wrong Avatar. THIS movie is about a company, or something, hiring people to use "Avatars" of the people on the planet that they are trying to get diamonds or something from. Not the best description, but that's the best I could do.
The planet they are on is so very beautiful, thanks to Avatars GREAT effects, it looks so real, original, and over all wonderful to look at. The animals on the planet are also VERY creative and original, I don't know how to explain how it looks. Just watch this movie.
But the story is lame, and not original. It isn't bad, just if it wasn't for the effects and the great action scenes, this movie would had been very uninteresting. I think the main reason why I think that is the same reason why I gave the Great Debaters a bad review, I felt that they were using an over used moral, and, while Avatar had some originality, didn't ultimately made me feel all the way satisfied with this movie. Its kinda of sad, because I felt the story had such great potential in the beginning, but ultimately turn into a normal action movie.
Oh, and some of the characters bugged me. You know the main characters, those tall blue smurfs, well I HATED those characters, I don't know why. I was ALWAYS hoping that they were all going to die in the end, and I was SOO disappointed. But I did like the MAIN character, I found him to be very likable. I also like the main villain too, even though he was the stereotypical action villain, he is still cool. I like most of the human main characters, not counting the bad ones, which I found weird, because I HATED the smurfs, specifically the main girl. Yet again don't know why.
I'm surprise I didn't like this movie as much as Jurassic Park, I like them both for the same reason. They're both action movies, with better directing then the normal action movie (though neither are Oscar worthy in my opinion, which is why I'm so mad that Avatar won both Best Director and Picture at the Golden Globes), and with great effects. I think the reason why I like Jurassic Park better because, like I said in my review, I think over all Jurassic Park is just better.
Either way, I really like this movie, I don't think its the best movie of the year, but I thought it was good. It was certainly better then Star Trek, God that movie SUCKED. I think Avatar is going to dominate the Oscars with sound, art-direction, and, of coarse, visual effects, and probable get nominated for Best Picture, thanks to the Academy Awards stupid ten nomination thing. But I HOPE it doesn't win, unlike in the Golden Globes, because I don't think this movie was that good. Its a good, but not great film. 4/5
