Del Toro takes aspects from different sources in fairy tale literature, old and modern, and crates his own horrific fable. It's disturbing, but if you read those old fables and Grimm's fairy tales, they are also as disturbing.
Come on, the space opera to end ALL other space operas! Saw this when I was 7 in 1977 and as soon as the Tantive IV was being chased over our heads by the Imperial Star Destroyer, my mouth dropped for the entire movie! An instant classic!
This is the worst movie I have ever seen! They were trying for a mature Roger Rabbit gimmick with live action and animation and failed miserably.
