It had to happen eventually. After standing at the top for an unprecedented seven weeks, Avatar was finally knocked out of the top spot. Surely it took a great film to topple the juggernaut that is Avatar. Something that could at least somewhat be considered worthy of being the first to defeat it. Dear John, congratulations! You've done it! With stellar performances by Canning Tatum and...wait a minute. Dear John? You're shitting me? Right? You mean to tell me, that a movie I've never even heard of was the first to beat Avatar?
Obviously Avatar wasn't going to remain number for years to come, but I'm a little insulted that it was beat by such a crappy film that had no artistic influence whatsoever. Granted, I have yet to see Dear John, and I don't intend on it, but the movie is right now at 30%. Based on that score, it tells me that a movie that is in fact WORSE than From Paris With Love dethroned the movie that singlehandedly brought the film industry to the next level. I was honestly pretty surprised. There really hasn't been a movie released since Avatar that I have been compelled to see. Being a poor college student, (thank you 40,000+ Emerson tuition) I try to only see movies that will be worth it. This explains why my past five trips to the movie theater have been to see Avatar (yeah, I have a problem, whatever.) Having said that, I am drooling over Shutter Island right now. This movie, mathematically, has to be good. Scorsese=amazing director. Leo=amazing actor. Scorsese+Leo=amazing movie.
So while I sit here crying and listening to Fall Out Boy because Avatar isn't number one anymore, I do get some gratification in the thought that once everyone realizes that Dear John is retarded and Shutter Island comes out, then two great movies will leave that weekend with a one-two punch. Shutter Island and Avatar. OMG I can't waaaaaaaaaaaait.
