Top 10 Badass Characters of the 90s

    Posted on 02/11/11 12:11 PM | Last edited on 02/11/11 12:11 PM

This article was the brainchild of Mediasaurs.com. Four cinephiles looking at badassery through the decades of cinema. Check out ThisGuyOverHere and atmr - after the movie reviews for the other decades!

    bad•ass (adj.) noun)

A "normal person pitted against superhuman odds and coming out triumphant." - Mediasaurs

After watching 13 Assassins I wondered if Hirayama (played by Tsuyoshi Ihara) was the most badass film character of all time. If you haven't seen 13 Assassins yet - you must - and you will see what I'm talking about. But is he really? Here are the top 10 badass movie characters from the 90s using the above definition. If I deviate from that definition, I explain why.

1991 The Terminator - Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Played by Arnold Schwarzenegger

He might just be a program running "protect John Connor" but The Terminator is unequivocally badass.

It's the not the one-handed swivel shotgun reload, the chopper, the mini gun, or the immortal one-liners, it's because he's bad to the metal endo-skeleton.

1991 Sarah Connor - Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Played by Linda Hamilton

We meet Sarah Connor in an insane asylum using a bed tilted upright to do chin-ups. The eyes that glare at the hospital staff from behind her room's tiny window are not the same eyes of the Sarah Connor in the original Terminator. She changed because she accepts she is the Mother of the most important figure in the human race, the one who will be the leader of the resistance against the machines after judgement day, and she dedicated her whole life to protecting him.

Gunshots to the leg and stab wounds in her arm do not stop her. Like the Terminators who pursue her, she will stop at nothing to keep her son safe.

1992 Insp. 'Tequila' Yuen - Hard-Boiled. Played by Yun-Fat Chow

We learn at the beginning of Hard-Boiled that if you "give a guy a gun, he thinks he's Superman. Give him two and he thinks he's God."

As two rival gangs fight over a warehouse Inspector 'Tequila' Yuen sits in the shadows loading his shotgun, smiling. Waves of more goons fill the warehouse and we think, "that's too many bad guys for one man."

Tequila descends from the roof of the warehouse from a wire and rains an inferno of bullets from his semi-automatic. He plummets and rolls as a cloud of return fire follows him - then he pulls out the shotty.

For Tequila, there are never too many bad guys.

1992 Malcolm X - Malcolm X. Played by Denzel Washington

Malcolm X has an ethereal quality. At one point an officer looks at the way Malcolm X commands an army of protesters with a simple hand gesture and comments, "that's too much power for one man to have." But that's Malcolm X's message: every man and woman can have the power and self respect to stand up against horrific inequity. And that the power to change our lives is immortal, and attainable.

1992 Ash - Army of Darkness. Played by Bruce Campbell

Just because we see a chainsaw fall from the hands of a wiseman and bind with Ash's severed stump, doesn't mean he's not human. Ash is just a regular guy against satanic and supernatural forces. He takes on the entire Army of the Dead - with conviction.

    Who wants some?

1993 Doc Holliday - Tombstone. Played by Val Kilmer

When Doc Holliday describes his nemesis Johnny Ringo as needing revenge for being born, he's describing himself.

Doc's life is an extraordinary struggle with his own ailments and tendencies: tuberculosis, alcoholism, gambling, and femme fatales. Holliday combats and does so with maniacal, indomitable humour. Like Ringo, he can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain. The difference between them is while Ringo uses boastful arrogance, Doc simply challenges with: "I'll be your Huckleberry."

1994 Eric Draven - The Crow. Played by Brandon Lee

The Crow might be invulnerable for most of the film but he's human emotion incarnate; he touches people and feels their pain. Nothing suggests he has a superhuman mechanism of coping with the additional emotions. Nor does he seem to have superhuman strength. It's almost implied his ability to overpower and take revenge on he and his girlfriend's murderers comes from these haunted emotions he carries rather than an otherworldly place.

1994 Jules Winnfield - Pulp Fiction. Played by Samuel L. Jackson

Jules is the badass to end all badasses. You can't say he faces many obstacles because it's difficult to imagine individuals or situations that could dominate his ferocity - the man's battle cry uses God as a personal pronoun.

In the restaurant hold-up scene where Ringo asks Jules which wallet is his, Jules answers indignantly, "it's the one that says bad motherfucker." Like Ringo should just know, as we do.

1994 Chen Zhen - Fist of Legend. Played by Jet Li

Chen Zhen seethes insurmountable confidence. He enters a dojo described as a fortress with a hundred men. Chen Zhen wants to challenge Akutagawa: the man who killed his master. When Chen Zhen refuses to leave one of the fighters attempts to force him out. In one fluid movement - without changing his posture - Chen Zhen grabs the back of the attackers head and slams him to the ground. To Chen Zhen, all these fighters combined are less than gnats.

Before he leaves he taunts Akutagawa, who lays defeated at his feet. "He'd have beaten you, it he'd been healthy." Chen Zhen has his shoes on to leave before Akutagawa manages to stand up.

1995 William Wallace - Braveheart. Played by Mel Gibson

William Wallace is a warrior poet who rallies a country and makes Henry V look like a dandy: "Fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live; at least awhile. And dying in your beds, many years from now. Would you be willing, to trade, all the days, from this that to that. For one chance. Just one chance! To come back here, and tell our enemies - that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our FREEDOM!"

Awesome list and heard of all except for 13 Assassins but a few that should've been included here is Toshiro Mifune of the Yojimbo films, Eastwood from the Dirty Harry films or with the Leone trilogy and the gory Baby Cart series, or The Wild Bunch! Also it wouldn't hurt to add Steve McQueen on to this list as well! Again, great list!

My mistake for the title of your page says the 90's action badasses, but sometimes the much older ones carry their badass personas through into the 90's! Still liked your list though!

I guess Ed Norton does overcome the law, but is that superhuman? Hard to say. He overcomes racism in American History X though, and that's somewhat of a superhuman feat. I actually haven't seen Cape Fear, I will correct that Thanks for adding to the list! I hope more people follow your lead

I'm sure you all get this a lot. Once people find out you like movies (and review them) they ask if you've seen ________

I gotta start writing these down. Would you be so kind as to help? RT user suggestions have been by far the best. To give this some structure, current suggestions: Westerns, 70s, and Hitchcock

It needs work. I feel it has the potential to be as good a video game webcomic as Penny Arcade and VG Cats, but the writing and art need to be bumped up dramatically if it's to catch on.

I really appreciate that you went looking for this, and I $%^&ing love you for reading 26 pages of the comic We try to improve the art and writing all the time (the theory is we get better too) Is there a comic in there you felt was strongest?

If I had to pick one, it would be where the guy destroys a Kinect at the store and berates the person who was going to buy it about how gaming has been toned down in recent years. The other would be the Street Fighter game with the kid friend.

I think you're right, the 5th one was the longest. You could probably make two films about a few HP books. I don't envy being given the task of taking the threads and dialogue of the books and making them into a cohesive film. They're so denseEvery new Harry Potter film when I see a trailer I get excited. Then I see the film and it's good but I always feel slightly empty. It's not like adapting The Road, people in the theatre generally have read those books and expect to see the books in film form.I SAY, cut what you want to make it work. If you need to cut out Quiddich completely, or Hagrid, or even Ron, do it.The reason the 5th movie was shortest was because there was so much narrative filler (how many times do we really need to go to Hogsmeade, seriously) and easiest to weave into a movie
