I’ve never made a list before so i thought starting it with my one of the favorite genre Animation would be a great idea.So here is my personal list of 'my favorites and no so favorites' animated films I've seen till now.One thing i would like to mention is, Hollywood may have come much forward in terms of providing some good cinema with great entertainment value (not artistic),but it’s still far behind countries like Japan and some others when it comes to Pure Animation. It’s technically superior,no doubt, but i still feel it treats animation as some ‘children’s genre’.I hope that it may come above of this sheer mindset.
Film’s I've listed are ranked are purely on my likeness towards them. Some films are low on the list though actually i ranked them high then others at the time i saw them. It’s just how much i like and feel about them ‘today’ is i listed them. Enjoyment factor has nothing to do with it.
My at the moment Top 15 favorite animated films are :
15.Millennium actress (Sennen joyû)
Story of Chiyoko, cursed (or blessed) to endure for 1000 years for finding her lost love. What we get in return is not only a beautiful love story but also a brief glimpse of last 1000 years of Japanese history seen through the eyes of our Millennium Actress.Little complex story but directed so neatly by Satoshi Kon,that sometimes it just goes away like a poem.A directorial triumph.
14. Spirited Away(Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi)
As a film it misses slightly towards the end but still,it’s magically wonderful plus i really loved ‘No-face’ and Chihiro.Beautifully animated with a great score,it’s one of the best I've seen.Deserves whatever it got.
Do I need to say anything about it.No.Every such list is incomplete without a mention of great Akira.
12.The Triplets of Belleville(Les triplettes de Belleville) / Sita sings the Blues
Because of the kind of plot it got even a slightest detail will ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. So not saying anything except that it’s got what i love the most and that’s ‘silence’.No one can beat power of silence.
It’s all about passion.Full marks for Nina for her outstanding independent effort. She took five years(my god) and a mere Laptop,to make it reality and thanks to her for reminding everyone of Annette Hanshaw again.Epic tale of Ramayana (from a women’s eye) with Jazz of 1920’s.Now that’s something.
11.Monster’s Inc. / Finding Nemo / Ratatouille
Aww,can’t say much except i love Sulley,Remy,Nemo all equally and aah,Dori.Totally deserves everything they got.
10. Fantastic Mr.Fox
As it’s name, just Fantastic. One of the best Wes Anderson film I've seen. When it comes to humor,no one can beat Britishers.Proved again.Brilliant.
9. The Incredibles
Best film of.Pixar for me,that until my no.4 came out.
8. My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) / 9
An unusual but still marvelous film from Miyazaki.A relatively slow pace film which when and how turns into a some kind of i dare to say, thriller is truly remarkable. The slow Hitchcock-ian style shots are just beautiful and for Totoro,I love you.I love you from the day i saw you.
9, only one thing, how the hell it went unnoticed?Stunning film and i loved just all of it,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,that X machine, that,,,
7. Mind Game
Crazy.Absolutely mindfuckingly hilarious film about some irrational characters that after a while got stuck inside of a Blue Whale.Disgusting plot but believe me,you’ll love it.It’s totally mad.
6. Paprika (Papurika)
Mind blowing film about a girl, specialist in altering dreams and using it for curing mental patients. It inspired none other than my own favorite ‘Inception’ so i don’t thing i have anything other to say about it.Excellent.Just excellent
5. Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no haka)
Story about a brother-sister abandoned after war with Sister suffering from Diarrhea approaching to death. High on emotions.Really emotional.Agree.I’m a very emotional person so there’s no way i couldn't fall in love with it.
4. Toy Story 3
I’m also surprised by how much i enjoyed, how much i loved it.I've never ever loved the idea of toy’s being alive neither have loved previous films but only mere glimpse of watching Woody and friends dying took me by shock and yeah,i almost cried that time.I’ve never expected that.Love you Woody.Love you all.
3. Mary & Max
A story about two people across the continents connected only by letters bounded by a pure relation of love, not love actually,it’s love cum friendship.A true friendship.I Love you Mary.I Love you Max.A gem.Sadly,an unrecognised one too.
2. Castle in the sky (Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta )
It took me on seventh sky after watching it. I wish there would be a real thing like Laputa and i could lost in it for my life.God knows if such things really exists or not.Only God.
1. Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime)
Film that every filmmaker wish to have in his portfolio.Film that still give me goosebumps even after a year now.Oh,Sure it has some minor flaws(in characterisations i think),but that doesn’t stop it from becoming not only in animes but one of the greatest films I've ever seen.Purely beautiful.Stunning.One of the most environmentalist films ever made.Heads off.A masterpiece......
Special Honours to :
Final Fantasy :The Spirits within
An astonishing film which i wonder why and how, anyone couldn't love.I’’m glad at least i did.Opening scene is blatantly taken in Avatar but no offence,I love Avatar too.
Ninja Scroll (Jûbê ninpûchô)
Good story with supreme violence.I like it.
Nearly perfect film but the reason it couldn't make it to above is,it misses that X factor which drives a film from mind to heart.
Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs
Oh our great scientists!!Can’t you make something like FLDSMDFR.I think that would be count as one of the greatest discoveries of mankind ever. For film, nothing but extremely underrated.Extremely.
I can’t recall how much i laughed that much before seeing it.
The Nightmare before Christmas
Everyone love it.So do I.
It shows how far we can go in terms of animation.Technically, devastating piece of animation. No wonder,it took four years to made.
Kirikou and the Sorceress (Kirikou et la sorcière)
Looks so honest and innocent.Only Africa-based anime I've seen.
Blood : The Last Vampire
It would be in my top list if it was any longer then it’s original length (i.e 43 minutes) but whatever it is,I loved it.
How to train your Dragon
Only thing annoying was it’s typical characterisation.Else,it’s good.It looks just gorgeous and really colourful.
The Little Fox (Vuk)
It reminds me of my childhood.Simple.Nothing special in it but that feeling is enough for me.
Simply a marvelous piece of animation.A standard setter for upcoming years.
Some Films that left me cold :
I actually liked it,but difference is a hell lot lesser than others. It quite didn’t lived up to it’s name that’s why it’s here.Up remained down for me.
I watch it only because of Satoshi,i really like him but what i got was a plain typical thriller that’s made in animation.Highly disappointing.
3.When the wind blows
What killed this highly acclaimed film for me was it’s extreme predictability. It’s not a bad film but i was certainly hoping much more than that.
2.Howl’s moving castle (Hauru no ugoku shiro ) / Nausicaa of the Vally of the wind
It really really drags for almost three fourth of it’s total run time with nothing much happening. It’s good near the end with Miyazaki looks in full form at a point but sadly for me,film got over much before then that.Big disappointment.
Nice film but falls tremendously short of my big hopes.
What to say??I really wanted to love it and while watching, was trying to find everything i could love.I got some but ultimately it fell short of my ‘great expectations’.I loved first 30 minutes(silence again.Loved it),that’s the time our wall-e is wandering on earth but the moment story shifts to space,it all a mess up.Personally,I love ‘Wall-e’ and ‘Eva’ but film,i didn't .I felt it’s weak by story wise too.
Films that were just painful to sit through :
Ah,those suffering with Insomnia, forget all specialists just go and buy DvD of Richard Linklater’s Waking Life, watch it and see the results and those who claims it to be a ‘greattttt’ film, come, meet me, you ‘#$%6*#@&*# s’.Unforgettable experience.
3.Barefoot Gen (Hadashi no Gen )
After a while,it’s all about, when all this gonna over.Just shameful how it treats the nuclear disaster of the century so cheaply.
2.Kiki’s Delivery Service (Majo no takkyûbin)
Boring.Boring.Boring.Boring.Boring.Boring.Boring.Boring.Could be funny for children but I'm not a child.
1.Shark Tale/Bee movie/Igor/........countless others
I can’t choose between the devil and the deep sea.
Potential heavy-weighs that could make through (any of) the list :
Waltz with Bashir (Vals Im Bashir)
Actually i have seen it but i think i need a re watch before any conclusion. It deserves it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion:Death and Rebirth (Shin seiki Evangelion Gekijô-ban:Shito shinsei )
Neon Genesis Evangelion:The End of Evangelion (Shin seiki Evangelion Gekijô-ban: Air/Magokoro wo, kimi ni)
Evangelion: 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone (Evangerion shin gekijôban: Jo)
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (Evangerion shin gekijôban: Ha)
Only reason i haven’t seen these highly renowned films is that I'm in the middle of the original TV series these are based on.
Ghost in the Shell (Kôkaku kidôtai)
Need to say anything??
5 centimeter per sec (Byôsoku 5 senchimêtoru)
Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no koe)
The Place promised in our early days (Kumo no mukô, yakusoku no basho)
Three highly acclaimed award winning films by same director,Makoto Shinkai.Looking worth a look.
Another acclaimed film by my one of the favorites,Satoshi Kon.
Final Fantasy : Advent Children
Sequel to The Spirits Within, how can i miss it!!!
Animated & acclaimed version of the great Metroplis.Anything else??
Ponyo (Gake no ue no Ponyo )
So what if Miyazaki has diappointed me more than once now,he’s every film is still worth a look.
The Girl who leapt through Time (Toki o kakeru shôjo)
Story of a girl who solves problems by her ability of time travel. One of the most award winning Anime of recent past.
As for now,that's it.
