Up isn't Pixar's greatest work (it's certainly in the top three), but it is by far their most ambitious, imaginative and funniest film, and one of 2009's best. The first 15 minutes, which features a life and death montage (yes this is a kids film from the people who made Toy Story), is sheer Pixar perfection, and will leave you absolutely breathless. This is based around old widow Carl Fredericksen (Ed Asner) who reluctantly befriends 8 year old Russell. Some comparisons will be drawn to Bambi and, dare I say it, Gran Torino, where an elderly citizen reluctantly befriends a younger Asian person. Perhaps they're being too bold, and some times the multi-part story doesn't flow as well as other times, but Up is a soaring (excuse the pun) success.
