A good genuine review, but I disagree with the harsh rating.

This is a awesome review, and very well written. I have to say personally that I hate Bill Maher, I think he is a liberal @sshole, but thats just me. And I don't think it matters what a person believes or not, because people are going to believe what they want to believe, no matter what other people say, which is fine. Again, Great review!

Good review, but is your rating meant to be 0%, or is RT playing up again?
on 4/13/10 at 09:38 PM
Yes. RT is fucking with my review. Sorry about that. It's supposed to be 70%

Thanks Don B. I appreciate that. I will do my best.

I completely agree with your review. this documentary had so much potential but Maher slants it too much that for me the message looses credibility. Awesome review
on 4/13/10 at 09:46 PM
I think he does lose some credibility in his onslaught. Although D Whitney raises a good point in a comment posted below: religion is intellectually indefensible.

Brilliantly written review Android. Iv'e seen the trailer for this film and though I'm not particularly a religious person (in fact I'd go far as to say I'm pretty anti-religion, though pro-spirituality) this guy Mayer really wound me up up. I'd rather watch a Bill Hicks take on religion documentary any day, unfortunately that doesn't look likely to happen any time soon...

Thanks Orpheus. I appreciate your feedback.

PS surely there's been a mistake with the zero percent rating though. It doesn't match the review (?)
on 4/13/10 at 09:58 PM
Yes. There most definitely has. It's supposed to be 70% but RT kept fucking with it and bringing it back to zero. It made me flustered. But I'm working through it.

thanks 4 the warning.nice review

I saw this abt 2 yrs ago. I remember enjoying it and seeing humor in many of his interviews. I agree he was a little rough on some of his subjects; but I did not think he "crossed over the line". Most thought provoking was the 3 "moderate" muslims who would not renounce death sentences for infidels. That was scary.
on 4/13/10 at 12:16 PM
Wow, I enjoyed it. I thought he did a good job of looking at religions from an outside standpoint unbiased by preconceived religious beliefs. Granted, his beliefs are more in line with Agnostic, and I guess that could offend people, but I thought it was well done and comical. I dont normally like Maher.

Personally, I grew up religious and realized its many flaws and no longer practice any religion. I agree that the questions posed were fair for the most part but I feel that the people the questions were posed towards were pointless and Maher had his heavy handed moments. There's a fine line between questioning and condescending, and Maher rides the line a few too many times. Now that was for the substance, as for a film, I just didn't think is was that funny. Yeah they found the ra

This is a very nice review - too bad the movie was CRAP! Whenever I dish out a 0% I hate trying to be eloquent and thorough. You, however, have done just that. Good work!
on 4/13/10 at 09:43 PM
Lol. Thanks SciFiMan. Sorry to disappoint you but I actually rated it at 70%.
on 4/13/10 at 07:04 PM
I see this film as a comedy, the most satirical comedy in that sense. It may looks a lot like a documentary, but I see it the way I see Borat or Bruno, with comedic point of view. I noticed that he really picked and chose his practical jokes "victims".
Yes. This film was funny at parts.

You forgot to rate it, mate. My nan's catholic, and I learned to just leave it alone, because religion is intellectually indefensible. I find that circle will just get emotional and/or call you names, rather than engage in an honest exploration.

Good review. I haven't seen this film but I'll look out for it. I think the distinction you are seeking is the difference between 'faith' (which is personal and not driven by dogma) and 'religion' (which has its ultimate goal the conversion of others).
on 4/14/10 at 09:02 AM
Thanks Francesca. That's an important distinction.

Very well written review, loved this one! Of course i am an atheist so i'm biased. :D
on 4/14/10 at 07:19 PM
Thanks Christopher. I am an atheist too. I admire what Maher did. And I thought it was funny. He was just kind of an asshole lol. But he's okay with that so it really doesn't matter what I think of him.
on 4/14/10 at 01:23 PM
Man, I gotta say, your review is insightful and interesting. You make fair points and you are quite understanding. I haven't seen this film, and nor is it on my top 20 'must-see' list, because I heard this being promoted as a mockumentary of religion, and I know I'm going to find it at least a bit offensive since I do believe in God. I don't follow the Bible nor am I a Christian, but I guess another argument for defending God being loving in Christianity is because their is love and justice. God

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Maher is a bit of an asshole, but his points are strong and valid. I was just disappointed he didn't let the religious people at least explain their views.
on 4/15/10 at 01:07 PM
I might have actually saw this film, just might, despite its mockery of religion if he fairly allowed the religious people a chance to purvey their views and form a greater balance. Oh well, maybe some other atheist filmmaker can make such an insightful film and not be an asshole like Maher.
on 4/14/10 at 04:59 PM
Fine review.I myself quite enjoyed this film, but you make fair points against it.
