 [/center] [center]Welcome everybody to Video Game Madness 2006. This will be my 4th year hosting the Madness, and every year there are new surprises and memorable battles. I hope you will enjoy it. I think you will. NCAA's very own Dick Vitale will be returning as co-host, as he hopes to bring his trademark qualities and add a bit of comic relief to all of the battles posted. This year's tourney has gotten a slightly new facelift with the large amount of new games participating. Most of them know they have no shot at winning the National Championship, but are just glad to be here and be recognized. In case you noticed by looking at the brackets below, Super Mario 64 is no longer listed in this year's tournament. They have retired and winning the title once is enough for them. Last year's winner was fan-favorite The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, finally winning the championship after being so close the two prior years. Can they defend it or will voter sway in a certain direction towards newer titles like Half Life 2 and Resident Evil 4? Unlike the last two VGM's, this will be a poll-based battle that will contain the ability for me to see who votes on what. I will only be counting votes from posters that have over 100 posts, so don't try to trick me. I'm pretty smart at catching people and it happens every year. If you do vote, and no one is certainly forcing you, but do post in the thread to give it a heartful bump, rather than voting in the poll and exiting out. It's just a simple favor I ask of you. On August 16th, Joe Ranft, Pixar Animation Studios' head of story, died in a horrible car accident only at the young age of 45.
He started out with Disney in the 1980's as a storyboard artist for The Brave Little Toaster, and went on with Disney co-writing future classics like Oliver and Company, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. Before joining Pixar, he collaborated with long-time friend Henry Selick becoming a storyboard superviser on The Nightmare Before Christmas. In 1992 he reunited with old colleague John Lasseter to work with Pixar who went on to co-write their 1995 masterpiece, Toy Story. He also provided the voicework for Pixar supplying his voice for Wheezy the Penguin and Hemlich the Caterpillar. I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Ranft in person for a few minutes at the San Diego Comic-Con who was one of my all-time idols. All the way from his early work on The Brave Little Toaster, Joe Ranft brought me closer to becoming the animation fan I am today. I thanked him for that and he was so greatful and is really such a nice guy. We didn't lose a great artist. We lost a great human being and the animation world will never be the same without him. Alright, this will be my official daily log of everything I have experienced from the moment I arrived in Seattle to the moment I am right now. I?m actually typing this from Barty?s computer in Orange County where I will be staying a few days before I head back to Minnesota.
Day 1: I?m not going to give you the long details about my bus ride from Minneapolis to Seattle, but the only real highlight of the two day trip was that I met zachbraff fan?s female equivalent. She was this giddy 9-year old girl who walked up to me with a strange look on her face and then told me that I looked a lot like Spock. We started talking about movies and such and she mentioned to me that her all time favorite film was SinCity. I was stunned. I thought I would never meet anyone other than the Legend himself with such broad tastes. So Jonathan? you should hook up with her if you ever plan to go to Seattle at all. Well, that?s all I am going to say about that bus trip. I rather not think about it honestly. Anyway, at 6:30am on Monday morning, Rick (RckSlck) picked me up from the bus station and we immediately left for the small town of Silverton, Oregon in hopes to meet up with Tristan (BronsonBeliever) and his girlfriend Celia. We arrived at Tristan?s after waiting quite awhile for them to meet us in a local strip mall. Rick and I crashed at his place and the first thing we did was watch the 80?s cult classic, Three O?clock High. I really had no desire to see it, but Celia was like ?You must!? but I?m glad we did, because while it?s pretty damn awful, it has some hilarious moments especially the infamous ?I want to bond with you? line. Bad movies and infamous lines don?t stop there. Just wait a couple of days and you?ll see what I?m talking about. Tristan and Celia gave us a small tour of the town afterwards. You all probably saw the pictures earlier in this thread, but we saw the famous dog (who is an ancestor of the Powerful Dog) and all the memorabilia painted around the town. For such a tiny town, it was really interesting to experience it knowing my background of growing up in nothing but big cities. Celia invited us to have dinner with her very conservative parents later that night just letting us know that her mom wanted to know what type of people Celia was going to be around the next couple of days. This is where the log turns towards the creepy side. The first thing Celia?s mom asks Rick and I when we are introduced was ?Have you been tested for AID?s yet?? Let me just say that me and Rick were stunned. I don?t think I?ve ever heard such a question before. Celia lives out on a farm, with about 15 cats and 2 dogs, so you can just get the understanding of what her parents are like. After what seemed like a day at her place, we got back to Tristan?s dead as a doornail, but we were awake enough to goof around posting pictures and watched Batman: Return of the Joker. Ignore whatever Tristan will tell you, the film is a masterpiece and the best Batman film ever. Rick fell asleep during the crucial flashback scene (what a loser), so we basically called it a night and went to bed. Day 2 will be up later. |
