Following is my list of the top 10 most overrated films of all time, IMHO!
By "overrated", I mean films which did not deserve the accolades that they were showered with.
1. Immense acclaim from audiences and critics alike, over the years.
2. A good number of Academy Award wins, particularly in the Best Picture or Best Director category.
3. Exuberant praise for a film by more than 90% of my fellow film-buffs who swear that the film in question is the "greatest film ever made".
So here goes...starting with #10:
10. Forrest Gump
This one beat Pulp Fiction in the Best Picture and Best Director categories! Unbelievable??? Believe it!
People probably warmed up to the heart-warming nature of this film..but come on..was it really that great? And please don't tell me this is Tom Hanks' best performance..he was much better in Philadelphia and Saving Private Ryan!
9. The Dark Knight
"The greatest Batman picture...mindblowing!" came the accolades!
Even been #1 for a while on IMDB, beating the shit out of The Godfather, The Godfather Part II....even though I now firmly believe that the IMDB 250 doesn't really make much sense.
But when I finally saw this film; "Wow! What did I miss!?"
8. A Beautiful Mind
Agree...it was a fine film...but I've seen so many people go ga-ga over it..."This is the best film depicting Schizophrenia!" Not really...
It has a fine performance from Russel Crowe...but I don't think it deserved the "Best Picture" win.
David Lynch lost the Best Director Oscar to Ron Howard!
I personally thought this film isn't as phenomenal as it is made out to be. Agreed, it is a very good film, quite an inspiring tale of an underdog with a surprisingly good performance from Stallone!
But this movie was awarded Best Picture at the 49th Academy Awards over "All the President's men", "Network", "Taxi Driver"....You decide!
John G. Avildsen beat the likes of Ingmar Bergman (Face to Face), Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men) and Sidney Lumet (Network) to win the trophy for Best Director for Rocky!! Martin Scorsese wasn't even nominated!
6. One flew over the cuckoo's nest
Nope...this movie is NOT better than Barry Lyndon; Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon deserved the Best Actor award (no disrespect to Jack Nicholson..he rocks, but Pacino deserved it this time), STanley Kubrick and Sidney Lumet lost to Milos Forman for Best Director! :(
I don't know..as usual, I missed something in this "one of the greatest films of all time"!
I am still wondering how Louise Fletcher got that Best Actress Award!
5. The Matrix
What a rage this had become!! There was not one individual who hadn't seen The Matrix. "Phenomenal..best film in decades" they said!! But when asked to analyze the plot or even discuss it, they were clueless....about 50% of the people I met who saw it didn't know what the hell even happened in the film...they merely enjoyed the breathtaking special effects.
I first saw this in California..perhaps a day after it was released there. I remember cringing at the blatant stereotyping of various ethnicities..and the overall silliness of it all..not to mention the boring and overly sentimental screenplay. This film went on to win the Best Picture and Best Screenplay oscar!
This one is a close second in the "hype" department after The Matrix. Christopher Nolan made far better films (and two of his best films) when he just started out, namely "Following" and "Memento". Inception pretends to be highly "intellectual" and "confusing" to the newbies..but for people used to far more complex themes and narratives, especially relating to the dream theory (all done in a much better manner in other films, needless to say), Inception is just an above average popcorn sci-fi fare.
2. SlumDog Millionaire
The hype surrounding this was immense! I come from the city they shot this film in...that the director chose to highlight only the filth of Mumbai is hardly my primary complaint. My biggest grouse is that this isn't even the great film it is made out to be!
The screenplay is ridiculous to say the least..with so many things possessing the qualities of a typically commercial entertainer...totally implausible situations/events, convenient coincidences in favour of the hero that finally lead him to his lady love and they happily break into a song and dance routine in the end! Dev Patel is a terrible actor...and Frieda Pinto? How did she ever get so far??
And the "King of the world..oops "king of all overrated films" is undoubtedly James Cameron's much loved epic. The hangover continued for several years after the film's release...it was hailed as the greatest thing to happen to cinema...Dicaprio-Winslet became the hottest couple.
When the film first released in India I was one of the idiots to queue up for long hours to buy that much sought out ticket to the show!
But I was so disappointed to see that the tragic romance got more attention than the Titanic disaster itself....not to mention the terribly misplaced dialog between the lead actors.."Jack! This is where we first met"..she says, when several people are falling to their deaths and the ship is almost underwater! "you jump, i jump remember?" (ugghhhh!!) What the....!
This one got 11 Academy Awards.....
So there it is, folks..my top 10 list of the most overrated films of all time. I am sure a lot of you would disagree, but I would love to hear what you think! :)
