Let Me In

    Posted on 04/13/10 08:37 PM | Last edited on 04/13/10 08:37 PM

Let me start off by saying that Let the Right One in is my second favorite film I've ever seen. So when I heard that there was going to be an American remake of this nearly flawless movie, I got fucking PISSED. I can say with 100% certainty that Let Me In will not be better than it's predecessor nor will it contribute any new element to the film that Tomas Alfredson may have missed simply because it's Hollywood. So why remake it? My first instinct leans towards the money. However I read an interview with Matt Reeves (director of Cloverfield and Let Me In) in which he stated that he is simply trying to remake the movie so that more Americans can see how great it was. He also said that he was a big fan of the film and that he will do it justice if fans are willing to give it a chance. I can respect him for trying but I'm honestly not sure how much of that was pure bull shit just to address the criticisms that are floating around the internet.

Now I've never seen Cloverfield so I can't comment on his directing style but the camera work in Let the Right One in was unlike ANYTHING I have ever seen before especially in American cinema. Tomas Alfredson tended to keep the camera still and let events happen around it almost as if you were sitting right next to Oskar and Eli. This style helped create the eerie feeling that is synonymous with this film. My favorite tool implemented by Alfredson was the way he used contrasting colors such as the white of the snow with the red of the blood, (white representing innocence and red representing impurity) to show a moral conflict between Eli's lifestyle and Oskar's. So obviously I was rather upset when the synopsis on rotten tomatoes stated that Let Me In was going to be filmed in Arizona, where there is no snow. However, the poster that was released showed them standing in snow so I’m not sure if the synopsis is correct but if it is I'm already 100% turned off to Let Me In.

So basically, my questions are, what do you guys think about Let Me In? Is it just being made for the money or does Reeves actually want to remake it for the reasons he stated? And most importantly, is this going to be a good film?

Thanks for your blog entry or whatever the technical term for what you wrote is. Honestly, any time a film is a success and they want to do a re-make, I am instantly skeptical and suspicious. I'm with you, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN should not be touched. My gut feeling is these fuckers just want to make money off the American market who are too lazy to see the original Swedish masterpiece.

I haven't seen Let the Right One In yet. It's on my to see list. Cloverfield was alright but stillness was definately not an element of it, but with ggod reason. It wasn't a bad movie but it was in no was inspired or inspiring.
