As its pretty clear from the trailer, Paul is a movie about being Alien. Not just from another planet, but also from the perspective of foreigners in another country as we watch Brits Simon Pegg and Nick Frost journey from Comicon to the UFO hotspots of the mighty US of A.
I don't want to go to in to the story too much as that's all you really need to know, needless to say the jokes come thick and fast on this road trip.....
We all know Pegg and Frost go well together after Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, but what works so well in Paul is the addition of some of America's best comedy stars, be it Jason Bateman, Bill Hader or Jane Lynch, better known as Sue, the guilty pleasure and to some, possibly the only watchable character in Glee.....and that's before even mentioning Seth Rogen as Paul, the instantly lovable rogue and star of the movie.
Whilst Paul is a bit slow to start off with, it soon finds it legs and proves to be both a very funny and quite sweet movie. And this movie will truly test your geek credentials, yup if you're a movie dweeb, or more specifically, a sci-fi nerd, then this film will hammer it home to you......
Recognise the music playing in the hillbilly bar when Pegg walks in - then you're a complete geek.
Recognise the voice of the movie director Paul's advising on a famous 80's movie plot - then you're a total fuckin' geek.
Recognise the "Get away from her you b*itch" throwaway line at the end of the movie and the relevance of who it's being said too, well then congratulations because you're probably a basement dwelling uber geek that will absoloutely love this movie....and lets face it, if your reading this review - then your probably an uber film nerd like I guess I must be..... And that's the great thing about this movie, it's a love letter from two guys just like us, who love the same movies as us....
That's just a tiny selection of movie homages to for us geeks (check out all those sweet-ass Leia's in slave bikini's....damnnnnnnn!) and if there playing to their audience, then count me kicked square in the nuts and served another slice of fried celluloid gold.
If anything, I wanted to the movie to be longer as it seemed to fly by all too quickly but that's my only real complaint, overall it's a fun ride and one that I think most of us will enjoy....and I have to say, I never thought I'd find the inappropriate touching of "space man balls" quite so hilarious.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
