It's not that Due Date is a bad film, its just that after classics like Old Skool and then The Hangover, it just doesn't measure up to them. With the pressure of these two hanging over him, director Todd Phillips was always going to struggle.
The story is that of a mismatched couple of guys, forced to share a road trip from Atlanta to L.A. It's not exactly a new storyline but with The Hangover's stand out performer in Zak Galafianakis and Hollywood's current golden boy, Robert Downey Junior, put together the odd's looked good. Unfortunately these odd's didn't pay out for me.....
Sure there are some hilarious moments involving butt ugly dogs jerking off, dozing off whilst driving and tripping out to super strain weed but overall, the laughs aren't consistent and don't come often enough. Neither character is as lovable or relatable as you would want them to be and for me, their chemistry on screen just seemed a little off. Part's that you can almost feel the scriptwriter being sure were going to raise a laugh really fell flat and it seems hard to believe this couldn't have been improved upon with a couple of test screeings.
Don't get me wrong, Due Date is both funny and touching in parts but that's the problem, in parts.....With the expectation of The Hangover weighing heavily, my overwhelming feeling after watching it was that of disappointment.
A shame really and definitely one to save for a rental rather than a trip to the theatre for me......
