I can't quite recommend Rob Marshall's Nine but I'm going to recommend its soundtrack. This film truly has the best soundtrack of the year. And, there are some other things that work -- like the superb cast, I thought that Daniel Day Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Marian Cotillard, and Judi Dench were all wonderful in their roles... the only qualm that I had with the ensemble is Kate Hudson but she isn't given enough screen time to put much of a damper on things. Her slight performance really clashed with the whole vibe of the picture. Whenever she'd appear on screen she'd manage to pull me out of the picture. She strikes me as being a 21st century woman playing dress up in 60s garb. The main problem with the picture is the fact that I just didn't care about Guido Contini and I didn't really like him either. Not only is he an unsympathetic figure, he's also a boring figure. So, it's a musical about a despicable bore. Yawn. The rest of the production is sexy as hell. The women, the cinematography, the clothes, the sets, and the locations. It's a gaudy bauble that dazzles but quickly evaporates once the film plays out its final reel.
