50 years from now, the Sun is starting to die, taking the Earth with it. Sunshine follows the eight crew members of the Icarus II, a team of scientists enlisted to restart the sun and save the world. Not exactly the simplest of tasks, especially since the astronauts of the Icarus I, assigned to the same mission, failed the task seven years previously. Everything seems to be going as planned as the ship reaches the "Dead Zone", where they will loose communications with Earth. They even have extra oxygen stored. But then one crew member makes a fatal mistake and the crew is forced to suffer the consequences.
This is one of my all-time favorite science fiction movies. Danny Boyle has proven himself to be a talented director with obvious range, making awesome films in multiple genres. The best aspect is the visuals- come on, did you SEE the greenhouse?! Amazingly, most of it isn't special effects. Boyle insisted that much of it would be the actual set.
Props to Chris Evans and especially the very versatile Cillian Murphy for notable performances as the hate-able Mace and protagonist Capa, respectively.
The only reason I didn't give it 10/10 is that things take a turn for the weird at the end... and yet, it's still worth whatever you had to pay to watch it.
If you absolutely HATE brilliant characterization, stunning effects and sets, great direction and cinematography, all scifi movies, inventive, emotional plots, and perfect casting, then I wouldn't recommend this movie. But if you're okay with all of that, you should probably see this now.
