Pixar's latest feature, Brave, feels both new and extremely familiar. It feels new because this is the first time Pixar has tried to do what their business partner Disney has been doing for almost 80 years, to do a fairy tale complete with a princess and everything. The story works quite well for the most part, but there were times where I had a been there/seen that kind of thing. If there was any classic Disney Princess film that Brave borrowed a lot of ideas from, it would be Beauty and the Beast. I noticed a few similarities between Merida and Belle, and the climax of the movie is almost taken directly from Beauty and the Beast. That being said, Merida is a fine addition to the line of Disney Princesses and is certainly up there alongside the likes of Belle and Tiana. The animation is absolutely incredible as is the overall presentation of the movie. Unlike Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon, every single character has a native accent, and there is absolutely nothing to pull you out of the experience. Overall, it's certainly not Pixar's finest, but it is a fine fairy tale that just about exceeds most of Disney's classic features.
